as i face a noice too...

Just curious if the whine stops when you push the clutch (so the diff's are not under load.

Could be my problem too.

I also hear some sort of grinding noise. Sounds like a handbrake which isn't fully off, if you understand what I mean.

It comes from the front of the car and indeed when I push the clutch pedal it goes away.

Would this be the front diff?

Regards,

Jan

search for Noisy defender diff on youtube. It sounds louder than in the video, the very last seconds are the best indicator of the whine.

Now ive been through a fair few diffs as my 90 is a very heavy modified plaything that gets a LOT of abuse.
It could be the diff, but that sound is very familiar to me with its Transfer box output bearing having recently failed (mine on the rear side where the prop joins to the rear diff.

Get the car on the flat, and chock wheels extensively. Take the car out of gear, transfer box neutral might be even better, and take off the handbrake. This should reduce tension and load on the props and thus the input and out put flanges on diffs and T box.

Go under the car (be very careful it can't roll!) and firmly grab the props, diff flanges, transfer bearings, and try and wiggle up and down, side to side, and see what happens. I am certain one of them will have some play. There should be basically no play at all. As in less than a millimetre. If anything moves you will need to rectify.

Whichever it turns out to be - when did you last change fluids? Manky old muddy fluid tends to kill any of these things so consider a full oil change out of all boxes and diffs once this is solved.
