Oil for Salisbury rear axle
I’m replacing the gasket on my rear axle and am obviously going to need more oil to fill it up again, previously I’ve used ep 80w/90 but I thought I ought to check online and have now found people saying that it must be GL4 grade not GL5 with others saying different, like one is suitable for the gearbox/transfer box and the other not and vise-versa, which has got me confused and concerned. Any ideas what oil is recommended for the rear diff and can the same oil be used in the rest of the transmission?

Lt230 can use GL4 or GL5
Diffs commonly use GL5 (EP90, 80W90, 75W90). Not sure which viscosity for your diff model.
Gearboxes mostly use GL4 or some other manual transmission blends. Straight GL5 is not recommended for synchro transmission. Puma 110" SW

I’ve since been told that GL5 can attack the brass components in the Salisbury diffs, so the more I look into it the more conflicting information I get, definitely confused now Confused

You can get oils that are both GL4 and GL5 and are fine for all the driveline. They are a bit more expensive but are good if you want to just use one product throughout. Miller's and Motul are two brands that make them.

If you are not sure I thoroughly recommend you contact Opie Oils. They are knowledgeable and helpful. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

apparently this only ever happens when the oil starts to boil, which is never, but the risk is there albeit very small.
GL5 for the most part is a better oil

The GL5 talk is a hangover from the Series era. Either is fine.
