Interesting video about catch-cans and EGR valves
I don't think that this has been posted before...

This is a link to an interesting video in which a boffin from Mann+Hummel explains the benefits both of the Provent and the EGR valve. In particular his comments about EGR deletion provide food for thought.

Those of us with Provents can feel justifiably smug!

The video is provided by the crazy dudes who run the extremely excellent 4WD Action channel, obligatory watching for those with a wanderlust. Enjoy.

Funnily enough I have been reseaching a catch can (Provent ion particular) over the last few weeks. They make a lot of sense to me, especially for remapped and aging vehicles.

That's very interesting. As you say, food for thought.

I will do some googling.

Interesting video above - haven't had the time to check out the other links. If I've followed this properly, my car as an elderly, non-EGR, 300Tdi will have oil vapour blowing through the sump/rocker cover, but because it doesn't have an EGR I don't have the compounded issue of soot being introduced into the air intakes?

I did try venting the rocker cover breather into a bottle, but there was so much smoke comng out of that that I to reconnect it back into the intake pipe. Donald

Very interesting, especially about EGR blanking. Food for thought indeed.

Fascinating stuff. Makes me feel much better about having my EGR valve replaced a week or so ago rather than go down the blanking route. It looks like a Provent is a good investment, though. Darren

It certainly looks a compelling argument to fit a catch can. My only concern is that my puma's under a warranty for another 15 months & I'm not sure how the warranty company would react if I had an issue & they saw I'd added a catch can.

If you fitted one, I'm sure the warranty people would find a reason why they wouldn't pay out on a claim.

They (nearly) all state that the vehicle has to be standard with no modifications.

I suppose you can see their point of view?

JPE - you must be the only Defender which still has a Warranty on here (on the basis manufacturing stopped almost 4 years ago :Smile

It's very easy to remove if you do it right. Basically the pipe to the Turbo area remains the same, it just connects to thee catch can, which in turn has a short pipe to the air box pipe.

you could remove it in 30 seconds at the side of the road if needs arose...(that's my plan anyway altho I am 5 years out of warranty Wink Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

A Provent 200 has been on my to-do list for a long time, but I keep baulking at the price of new one. Any recommendations of where to get the best price? There are a lot of knock-offs for a fractions of the Mann price on Ebay, but given it is plumbed into the engine, probably not worth the risk. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The last one I bought came from Multifactor Europe (https://www.mfeuk.co.uk/provent/) and was £86.46 plus vat, whcih I thought was pretty reasonable. As far as I can tell, all the eBay ones must be knock-offs since they are absurdly cheap, and the filter inside looks nothing like the high-tech Mann+Hummel filter.

MFEU also sells non-return valves for the drain, which you will need if draining into a vented catch can.

I also found that there is an Australian company which makes hose adaptors specifically for the Provent 200 which simplify and neaten the installation, these are available via eBay. The service and shipping from Australia is very quick. Link

I'll see what I can do, but I'll have to take the photos first. It may take a few days.
