Quewstion about keys
ok. this may see silly....

On my 1999 defender 110 the door key is a different size to the ignition key. Is this the same for a 2004 defender?

My problem is the the 2004 beast has central locking ... the battery is flat ... never had another door key as I've always used the central locking ... ignition key doesn't fit door locks.... so thought I'd try and get a key from land rover ...

but before I do ... just thought I'd check whether the ignition key should fit thedoor lock.

A 04 reg Td5 will/should have one key that will do everything apart from stupid locking fuel filler cap.

Big Cry

According to the parts dept at our local land rover dealer, it should have 2 keys one for ignition one for doors and they only get key blanks which are then cut to fit the lock ..... so I'd need new door locks Santa - 1977 Series 3 - new chassis, tub, brakes

Ehhhh. So it’s 2004, so one key as it’s after 2002, why is parts man saying two keys?

Just charge, jump, provide power via the connection to the starter motor, or via tow socket if you have one.

My 2005 Td5 has one key that fits the ignition, driver’s door and tailgate. There’s no keyhole on the passenger door but the central locking works on both sides. Like everyone else, my fuel filler cap has a different key . . . . 2005 Defender 90 TD5

I suspect the steering column barrel was changed at some point. It's about £80 for a new set of ketys and barrels, so gues I'll do that at some point.

As for getting in

1). No direct power feed via trailer socket so couldn;t apply battery power that way
2). There must be a relay between starter motor and rest of electrics as disconnecting starter motor connections and connecting new battery there didnl;lt work either.
3). Eventually used oldest trick in the book to open the drivers door. As soon as I connected up a new battery she strted 1st time and has beenfine since then

I think when they started doing the “one key” it was maybe the county models that had that first seemed that way when I was working on them?!
