Nope, just looked. Mk6 transit was floor mounted but a different shaped knob. I'm sure I've seen it somewhere other than a defender Confused 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Thanks for checking. It does seem likely that it is a standard Ford part, if it was Defender specific I'd expect LR branding not Ford.

I carried out a knobectomy last night and once you remove the outer 'skin' and the inner plastic endoskeleton there is a 12mm od steel shaft remaining. My current plan is to thread this M12 and fit a classic SIIA/SIII style knob, creating a proper heritage gearshift.

That sounds pretty nifty. Look forward to seeing the result.

Are you going to do the same to the transfer lever as well? 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

It had crossed my mind if the main lever looks ok. If it looks awful I probably won't!

Sounds cool. I'd like to replace my gearstick being plastic and poor. I didn't want to fork out hundreds on a leather or Bowler item though. Gap in the market for an affordable upgrade.

Blackwolf's "heritage knob"!
Well, here is the first incarnation of the heritage knob project. Looks are a bit "marmite" (I quite like it), it is extremely comfortable to drive with a proper spherical Bakelite knob, and it really is reminiscent of a SIII. What is more, it only cost £3.50 for the knob and an hour's work. That being said I am sure that many people will hate the appearance. It is marginally longer at present than the original since the knob sits further up the shaft, but it would be easy to shorten it (I wanted to try it long first, since it is easy to shorten but not to lengthen). I may adjust in time. Personally I think it looks much nicer than a Bowler shifter.

A forum member has also kindly agreed to sell me a s/h lever so I have the option to go back to the original look. (Thank you Thumbs Up )

Thoughts and comments are welcome, but remember this repair only cost £3.50 (yes, alright, I know it looks a lot cheaper than that)!

I replaced our beetle knob with a pool ball - just the right size and I chose the colour to match the car Laughing Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Two weeks and many miles later and I have to say it's much nicer than the old plastic knob!

Being a hard shiney surface it's also easier to sanitise, which has topical relevance.

I must investigate fitting a red one on the other lever.
