Power cuts out on motorway
I’ve just purchased a 1992 defender 90. The previous owner did a td5 conversion on it. It’s been a delight to drive until today I took it on the motorway for the first time. First half an hour was fine then the power cut out on me entirely. The engine was still running and I could still rev the engine but no power was going through. Changing gear made no difference. Pulling up on the hard shoulder, stopping the engine and restarting the engine and everything was fine again, for maybe 5 minutes. It happened again about 5 times, until I was able to take it off the motorway. Once I was off the motorway I’ve had no further problems.

Anyone got any ideas on what might be wrong? Or should I just take it in to a garage?

Thanks for any help![/i]

What did the temp gauge say/do during this?

If the temp gets too hot, then it will cut the power. On td5s the temp gauge is a magical device. Part real, and part false, the first half works as norm, then half and above is controlled by ECU and will make it enter limp mode. That’s basic terms.

Also can be triggered by loose relays, or bad earth to relay, fuse mount under drivers seat. But all these tend to display by the gauges doing odd things.

Do you think it may be a heat issue?

Yes if I had to guess I would have said something heat related.
I didn’t notice anything with the gauges.

Anything obvious to check if it’s heat related?

Cheers!

Without more context there are lots of possibilities:

Rad blocked (both internal and external)
Viscous fan operating as intended
Water pump
Coolant level
Brakes binding
Thermostat
Temperature sensor Darren

I would check the basic cooling stuff.

Check rad isn’t full of mud (not unknown of in a Defender)
Viscous fan is doing what it should, and is complete
Fan cowling is complete
Water/coolant level ok
Coolant system free of air.

How hard were you pushing it?

Surely the whole point of a Td5 is that you can plug it in and the computer tells you what the fault is, or at least gives you an idea?

I think I would be checking the injector loom coming out of the rocker cover for signs of oil ingress too.

Oddly enough I did once have a similar symptom in torrential rain on the M3, cruising along when suddenly it felt like the engine cut out temporarily, just for 2 to 3 seconds or so, which then cleared for about a minute and repeated. Gave me a pretty big shock at the time as I was in the fast lane above the spray of all the other cars who had slowed down significantly with the spray. I never found out what caused it, I assume water got into somewhere where it shouldn't.

It hasn't done it again to me in the last 3 years. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Any recommendations for a fault code reader, or am I best getting a garage to have a look?

Thanks for all the suggestions I’ll have a look over it on the weekend
