TD5 - Strange starting problem
Over the last few months my 110 has developed a strange starting problem.

This is what's happening;
- Turn ignition on
- All normal lights come on. Temperature guage normal, fuel pump running
- When glow plugs go off, turn to start
- nothing, just a click
- turn off
- repeat the above and it starts

If you remove the key from the ignition barrel and try again it won't start but just goes click until the second time of trying.
Occasionally it's takes two or more cycles before it tries to start.

Things I have tried so far;
- replaced both yellow relays under the drivers seat
- cleaned up the earch point under the drivers seat
- cleaned up te earth on chassis and gearbox

My next thought is to check the ignition barrel, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for or if there are other tests I can try.

Thank you for reading.

sounds like a starter issue and it might need a rebuild to solve it. it will get worse and it will stop starting eventually. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.

Sounds like a dodgy starter motor solenoid. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Thank you.

I change the solenoid contacts five years ago. Worth having a look to see if they need replacing again.

Hi
Yes definitely the starter, I had the exact same problem with the 110 2005 td5 I had, it got very bad, so I replaced the starter with a new Bearmach one in Feb. Problem sorted.
Kind regards

Thank you all for your help.

New start motor solenoid kit ordered from Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Diesel-Starter-Re...amp;sr=8-4).

Depending on when it arrives tomorrow I'll get it installed and update this thread.

Thumbs Up

Starter
Replace starter solenoid and connections , think you can still buy kit from most suppliers for around £50
