Ah, I misunderstood and thought you AND the incinerated vehicle were in Prague.

Unfortunately I can't really help with the move since I am on the south coast, but hopefully someone can.

Thought I'd offer an update on this. The wire from the handbrake had cut through the wiring loom causing a short, which caused the burning etc. Aside from a scorched handbrake and possibly the Speedo drive it looks like a new loom job. I'm just in the process of getting it recovered. 2011 110 USW

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "the wire from the handbrake", do you mean the cable that connects the lever to the handbrake mechanism? On my 2.4 I don't think the harness is anywhere ere near that.

There also isn't a speedo drive as such, just a transducer.

Whatever, I hope it isn't too expensive - I fear a new main harness won't be cheap to supply and fit.

Yes I meant cable. On mine the cable runs above the loom at 90 degrees across the loom, although I'm at a loss to explain how it cut in.

It's been dropped off at the garage now so hopefully will have some more idea soon. 2011 110 USW

Once you've had a chance to assess it, if I can help with connectors or anything else to repair the loom let me know.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

To bookend my fire story...

Apparently the battery had slid forwards in the seatbox shorting out and using the handbrake cable as an earth. This heated and stretched the cable, leading to the plastic surround burning/melting. Applying the handbrake completed the circuit leading to burning & melting of the handbrake boot. The loom itself was only slightly damaged by being touched by the hot handbrake cable. The loom was repaired, new cable and boot, battery resecured and that was it, all fixed. 2011 110 USW

Glad it seems to have been resolved relatively easily and the cause is simple to avoid again. Its not the first time I've read about battery moving and causing fire, so we'll worth highlighting to check! Thumbs Up James

Oooo I feel your pain. I had a similar thing happen in my old 90, but it was the winch that earthed through the brake cable. As soon as I began to winch someone... Burning plastic and smoke.

Hope you get it sorted and it is only the hand brake that needs replacing. Thumbs Up

The joys of a transmission brake! In the old days it was always the throttle cable which melted and fused when the engine earth strap broke.

I have happy (well, perhaps interesting rather than happy) memories of driving a borrowed Subaru many miles with a bootlace tied to the throttle lever on the carb and running in through the passenger window instead on an accelerator after this happened. It took a few miles to get the hang of things. I recall that double-declutching was tricky (I just had to try it) - right knee on the steering wheel, boot-lace throttle in right hand, left leg on clutch, and left hand on gear lever.

Those were the days.... Rolling with laughter

Yeah it's all sorted now, done maybe 500 miles since. I can& to help but think my recent increase in use/mileage over the last 12 months might not be helping things. 2011 110 USW
