Aluminium corrosion treatment - something i saw on here....
Hi,
I've searched and searched until my fingers and eyes are sore!

I know the question of treating allu body panels has been covered before, but I am certain (as certain as I can be) that I came across a post on here a little while ago showing a "bottle of stuff" that could be used on aluminum panels. Kind of like the equivalent of Kurust, but for aluminium.

Same as everyone else no doubt, I have lots of places where the paint has bubbled or 'spidered' and I want to treat this before getting the car sprayed. I'm going to brush it down (using scotchbrite, or brass, not steel) and then etch prime it, but if it made sense, I would use this mystery "bottle of stuff" prior to etch priming.

(This is on body panels where there is no steel behind. I'm quite up on galvanic corrosion, and am slowly going round the car isolating as many steel/ally bonds as practical without taking the body off or completely apart...again.)

I may be going mad, and this might be a wild goose chase, but I thought I'd ask. There's a reasonable price tag on re-spraying a 110, so I'd like to make sure I get it as right as possible. The agreement is that I do some of the basic prep before taking it to the paint-shop to save some pennies.

I'm not actually that bothered about a gleaming factory finish I could use as a mirror. In fact if it wasn't for the fact that shiny new doors are going on, I wouldn't be getting it painted at all. Quite happy with scratched and faded red, but that's OK if all the panels are scratched and faded. Once new doors go on, it would look daft I think. Hence the paintshop.

Blah blah blah. Confused

If anyone can point me in the direction of the post I'm looking for, or for the 'aluminium magic potion' I'd be grateful.

If you zoom in on the rear quarters here, this is the sort of stuff I'm talking about.

Thanks mate,

It could be the right stuff, though I think it was a 'treatment' rather than a cleaner. I think that's why it stuck in my mind - but I should have hit 'follow topic' at the time.

The picture I saw was a translucent/opaque bottle, with a plain white screw top....

Like I say, maybe a wild goose chase, but thanks for the reply. Donald

In the past, I have used Isopol metal filler, make sure its metal filler and not the plastic variety. Sand of as much of the corrosion as possible and then fill sand and paint. While I do not still have the Defender I repaired I did own it for more than five years after I did the repair and it still looked fine. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Is this the tread I took a screen shot when I saw it too as I thought it may be helpful dealing with panel corrosion prior to repainting work.

That aluminium stuff is dangerous stuff, be very careful handling as suggested.
I've seen a lot of comments on YouTube about such products that are very caustic indeed! Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Perfect, gents! That's exactly the thread and info that I was looking for. Now that I have that, I'll have a good look at the product and see if it makes sense for me.

If I use it I'll report back.

Thanks again. Donald

Kind of a 'yes and no' reply to that.

I was speaking to the technical guys at Frosts restoration about their POR15 paint and its use on aluminium.

He advised using their 'metal prep' stuff first; putting it on for 20 minutes; then rinsing off, at which point it was leaving behind a zinc sulphate covering for priming (maybe?? I don't have my notes to hand, but it was something like that).

So I've gone for that and it's in the post, so I'll see how that goes. It might well be the same sort of stuff.

I'll post back on here when I get it and use it. Donald
