Automatic all wheel drive with 2wd, and 4wd lock modes and low gear. NVG 246 "AutoTrac" four wheel drive system. 2Hi, Auto 4wd (100% of torque is transferred to rear wheels until it detects a need for extra traction. Dry multi-plate clutch is used to transfer torque to the front), 4Hi (50/50 split), 4Lo, all button activated. 2.72:1 low range gear 3.73:1

GM's 10 bolt IFS front with Central Axle Disconnect (CAD)

GM's corporate 10-bolt live axle with g80 limited slip (opt) and 3.73:1 gears

It would be interesting if you could make some more empirical MPG calculations.

From the sound of it, with Auto 4WD should see no difference to 2WD in normal driving.

Driving in 4Hi would be equal to driving a Defender with the centre diff locked.

The Defender transfer case is really good because the open diff allows for all wheel drive with even torque across all wheels and no binding of the driveline, hence little to no perceptible MPG loss but with more stable driving characteristics

Not quite, since 4Hi will be rear-wheel-drive only unless or until the ECU detects conditions which cause it to lock the clutch pack. It will only engage the front-wheel-drive if a rear wheel is starting to lose traction, the instant traction is regained the front-wheel-drive will be disconnected again. It is not possible to drive for any significant time in real 4WD.

It depends on the system and how it's programmed. That specific transfer case seemed to have both a 4WD Hi Auto setting which in my view would work as per your description, and a 4WD Hi mode which would work as I described.
