Grease Nipple Help

Hi folks,

I have looked back through the posts and I cannot seem to find the info, although I know I have seen it somewhere!

My local indy is struggling to get grease into the UJ's etc, and I think I remember a post saying a Chainsaw Grease Gun will do the job.

Is this the correct one:

If he's having trouble connecting a grease-gun onto the nipple, then he either needs a slim adaptor on the end of his grease-gun (there are threads on thsi forum about this), or he needs to do the job properly. To do the job properly one or both ends of the propshaft needs to be unbolted from the drive flange to allow the joints to be articulated to distribute the grease, and if you can articulate the joint there is no problem getting any normal grease-gun securely on the nipple.

If, on the other hand, you are saying he is getting the gun on the nipple correctly but can't get any grease into the joint (another common problem) then the issue is that due to insufficient regularity with the grease-gun the old grease has solidified in the UJ and the new grease can't get in. In this case you have two options really, one is to remove the UJ, dismantle it, clean it, and then reassemble and regrease, the other is simply to wait until it fails (which will be soon) and then replace it with a new one.

A chainsaw greaser won't help with traditional nipples. There are people on this forum who have adapted their door hinges to allow the use of a chainsaw greaser on the hinges with good effect.

At each service I think it's just too awkward but the trick is to roll the prop shafts to allow a line of attack
for the grease gun to get on the UJ nipple as square as possible, I use a short stubby gun that works well.

I always jack up one side, put it on a stand. Out of gear and wheels chocked of course.
Handbrake off if on the rear.
And rotate the prop around to open at the widest point where the nipple is accessible.
Usually the upper side neatest the top.

I have never had any issue doing it this way, and of course you can take it off if you want but reference mark it so that it goes back in situ.

Putting some in, rotating the prop a few time then adding more does the trick for me.
There nearly always is more grease from some of the cups than others.
There shouldn't be a problem using a grease gun with standard tip as long as it's not huge.
Mine a Draper pistol type, I'm not saying it's absolutely excellent but it doesn't do the job.

an alternative approach is to buy a couple of extended nipples. makes the entire job a POP It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten

Something I didn't see mentioned (I might have missed it!) is - take it for a drive first to warm up the UJ's and soften the existing grease, and also take the grease gun inside overnight so its soft and warm too - will make getting it in much easier especially and particularly in January!

All done and dusted now, they unbolted them to do the job properly and filled them up, feels much better now.
