Problems with starter motor
Happy New Year...

So I went laning shortly before Xmas, which included some bumps and deep wading... there were no immediate problems and I drove the 2 hours home without a glitch.

However, a few days after and I've been having some starter problems which may, or may not be related to the adventurous laning...

It sounds to me like the teeth of the starter are not engaging with the flywheel (if I understand the mechanics correctly)... it's intermittent as you will see in this video, it doesn't engage first time but does the second 2 times...

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Stiggy...

Hi stiggy

Sorry link not working for me, is it a single click large click or many small clicks.

Big clicks, starter motor.
Many small clicks electrical or voltage.

Does it “grind” when it eventually engages?

If so could be sediment in the assembly or possibly worse on the face of the teeth, so when you engage you push sediment into your flywheel. Try removing it, clearing it up and inspect the solonoid.

I had mine fail on me and I left it over 4 months, it started off as 2nd turn of ignition, then 4 or 5 until I was at 20 or so. Then one day I went over 60 times and the motor had completely burned out, turning a £15.00 solonid replacement into a complete starter replacement. Luckily I got one supplied and fitted for £100.00 at a breakers yard. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

The solenoid appears to be working fine (I replaced the contacts a while ago)... the starter motor spins, but it sounds like it free-spins and the teeth don't engage with the flywheel. We weren't' wading through sludge/mud so there shouldn't be much gunk in the teeth.

See if this link works:

Are the teeth stripped or worn? I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

I haven't had the time to remove the starter motor so no idea... I'm suspicious since it was only after the laning trip that things began playing up... but that could just be coincidence
