You can buy Tdi wing decals, I bought one for my 300Tdi.

The factory didn't fit Tdi engines to Feb 1990 pre-Defenders, and there is no air intake panel in the front wing.


Nothing wrong with a late One Ten hard top. It was probably a Diesel Turbo, as much of the plumbing would have been there.

Look forward to seeing how you get on with the rebuild.

The Bulkhead is off and tomorrow the cylinder head is coming off. I'll get an idea of the condition of the block them. Drained the fuel filter in the process of removing all the ancillaries. It wasn't what I expected - kinda green, or agri diesel for us. Same as red in the UK. So obviously its been off the public road for a while. Ahem. Plus the engines been run without an air filter, the state of the turbine is not good. Hmmm. Ill stick up a few 'photos.

A few photos to update the progress.
Big end bearings Cylinders 1 to 4 left to right top and botttom.
The now empty block - only piston oil jets and camshaft left in.

Very tough to tell from the pics, but the bearing wear seems to get worse from left to right, although it doesn’t seem hugely excessive, there is no clear spalling or pick up on the surfaces, just fair wear and tear.

Thanks for the reply. I have never stripped an engine before and I have no idea of past service history, so what is normal or abnormal wear I dont know. I have the main bearing shells out this evening, bit more scoring on them. I'll get them cleaned up and take a few pics. Is there any point in taking out the piston jets? or the cam shaft? or is it better to leave well enough alone?
All the valve stem seals were not seated which would explain the smoky engine, is this just poor fitting or do they 'ride up' the valve guides?

If the heads cracked, that will give you a good chance to check out what options you want to go head wise. I do know what you going through, taking on someone else's work, going in at the depend such as engine rebuilds etc. Me and my dad reworked a rover metro GTA, and put a 160 VVC engine in, and doing the head gasket. It was a major learning curve for us both, I learned a lot from it too! My mistakes etc, so I wont do that again with the Peugeot and the defender. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I have rebuilt lots of engines and learnt a lot , biggest mistake I ever made was to fit a BL A series thrust washer in the wrong way round, it was fine until you pressed the clutch and the engine would then stall!! All the others I have built have given good service, and that one did after I took it back out of the car stripped the gearbox off and fitted new thrust washers.

Regards taking the cam out to clean the block properly you need to and you need to check the cam lobes and bearings carefully.

I would say strip the block right down, get it cleaned, or clean it yourself, clean all the oil ways rigorously. Paint it before reassembly. Check the cam bearing, check the crankshaft journals carefully as you may need this grinding and replace the big end and mains even if they look AOK (with the correct sized new ones). I would also replace the oil pump even if it looks fine. (as the saying goes why sink a ship for a half penny of tar).

Follow the manual and take your time and your hard work will be rewarded with an engine you can be proud of. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

LR90XS2011 i did a headgasket on a VVC k series engine, one thing i should have done was clean the bloody injectors with carb spray! once everything was fitted etc, the car would rev and cut out. Would have saved me a bomb that on parts i bought to replace what i thought was going wrong!! After the carb treatment it ran sweet as a nut until it jumped into gear and hit a wall Big Cry Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Engine block, Head and crankshaft gone to specialist for testing/refurb. One thing I did do is buy a GKN Overdrive for it. Bit premature, but one came up fairly cheap and I couldn't pass it up. Axles all stripped. From here its rebuild.

Been gone a while, but been tipping away at the rebuild;
By chance I got a galvanised landrover (an original 200tdi) chassis from Trevor Cuthbert in Belfast. Big win I thnk, but its got a later rear cross member.
I've had the head pressure tested (about 2 years ago), all ok so had new valves/seals etc fitted, and head skimmed. Injector pump and injectors being reconditioned. Cylinders honed and good to go. Have rolling chassis now with all new oe bearings/swivels etc. Bulkhead needs minor repair which local shop are not too keen on as its thin metal. Have all the bits for engine and transfer box rebuild, have to task gearbox rebuild to someone with proper tools. The intake and exhaust manifods appear to be from a 300tdi (with 200 block and head) so a bit of fettling to do. But going good to date if a little slow. Declared off road untill feb 2023 but hope to be back on road before then.

Have enjoyed reading this so far, and eagerly awaiting more updates.

Since I read some comments about engine, you can easily know if it was originally a Diesel Turbo (aka 19J) or a 200tdi from the VIN. 8th character is the engine, B is for the 19J whereas in the UK, F is for the Tdi.
So if your VIN goes by SALLDHAB.... then it had the 19J.
If it is SALLDHAF.... then it has always been a tdi

Since you mention it has 300tdi manifolds/turbo, it is possible that it is the original engine which had a turbo failure?
