What's going on in France?
I've read something to the affect of the people are mad at high fuel prices. Are they really that high by Europe's standards? Also, didnt Macron beat LePen fairly easily? Isnt this what France asked for, at least 65% of those who voted?

I think diesel there is over €1.50 ish a litre at the minute and there is a planned fuel tax increase on for the 1st of Jan. the tax increase is justified by government on environmental grounds. Given diesel is the most popular road fuel in France especially in rural area, folk ain’t happy. In rural France there is little alternative to driving if you want a productive existence. France has a great tradition of protesting things they don’t like, which should be applauded. Unfortunately this time it has been hijacked by fools who are just out for a fight and to cause trouble.

I have seen a couple of protests in France over the years, mainly around agricultural matters, and they have always been forceful but not violent. There was dispute over milk prices a few years ago, in one town the Mayor’s office got the door bricked up overnight, and in another trailer loads of manure dumped at the entrance to the supermarket. There was also a town square blockade by milk tankers threatening to flood the place with sour milk! 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The gilet jaune movement is a response to the targeted taxation of motorists by Macron through tax hikes on fuel and lowering of the 90kph limit to 80kph without speed limit signs being changed.
They didn’t ask for that when they voted for him and he didnt propose anything like it in his manifesto. Just to correct the OP.....65% did not vote for him, in fact more people abstained than voted for either candidate, a record, and his approval rating is half that of Trump.
His response to the peaceful protests was to tell people to buy an electric car.....
The movement was co-opted by thugs this weekend, mainly radical lefties and “new French” who dont care about the issue, just want more free stuff. The poodle media are pushing it as being the fault of the gilet jaune but the French people are not buying it and there is serious talk of Macron being forced out of office now. Living costs have risen 23% since he came to office, and in January he’s implementing more taxes. Not one euro collected has gone to environmental projects and he’s been out and about inviting most of Africa to come live here for free (no offence to Africans but get in line please).
It’s little wonder the country is up in arms....

I had 5 days in France in October and picked up 3 speeding tickets (not in a Defender). They seem to be focussing on drivers which is a shame as the roads are fabulous.

Was your speeding due to the new (about 6 months ago) reduction of the national limit. Taking it from 90 to 80kmph?

It's the BBC - why would you expect accuracy. Great for Sport and Gossip (bit like The Sun), but politics, business and unbiased news coverage are long gone.

Too true....taxpayer funded fake news full of tax dodging champagne socialists preaching down to the ones who pay their wages. They even said there was going to be a new Defender launching in 2018 on one of their shows!

Both the far right and far left regularly accuse the Beeb of bias.

Normal folks laugh at the irony.

Your media can't be worse than the US media. Rarely critical of our last president who received a Nobel prize before actually doing much of anything. Never did much of anything for the poorest in our black communities except grow welfare dependance. Also lied to the American people about his healthcare proposal which has given health insurance providers record profits and made the cost of insurance go up and reduced health care choice.

Obama, early in his term wanted to pass a cap and trade bill that would have had really dire consequences. It was a carbon credit tax scheme that has its roots from Al Gore and Kenneth Lay of Enron. Of course he faced alot of opposition and the media labeled all of us that didnt submit , as racists. Environmentalism is perhaps the greatest tool ever conceived by progressives who have an insatiable appetite to make others pay for their ideas while they get rich and pat themselves on the back. Environmental policy as well as migration policy is being used as a weapon against western societies.
