Should I install chequer plate with a bead of silicon?
I can’t decide. Am I sealing dirt and crap out, or sealing it in? I need to fit some sill protection and can’t decide if I should seal it or not? What is the common protocol?

What ever you decide, don’t use silicone. It’s not great for external use, and will effect any painting you have done. If you wish to stick it, use a PU sealer, such as tiger seal, or even a sticks like Censored , or builders Pu sealer.

Some I’ve stuck on other bits I haven’t bothered. You can get foam seals, but they don’t stop the crap from getting underneath anyway, and just make the CP fatter/higher.

Andy.

Chequer plate sill protection? What are you trying to protect the sills from?

IMO if you want sill protection better to take existing Ali sills off and replaced with either rock sliders or rock and tree sliders

I’m tying to protect the sills from kicks and scrapes when getting in and out of the vehicle. To be clear, I don’t want to stick them on, they will be bolted in place, but wondered whether a bead of something or other would prevent any crap from ending up trapped behind.

As Brendan said. Remove and fit rock sliders. Then if you sell at a later date you can refit them and they're as new. That's what I have done. Thumbs Up

Rocks sliders seem like a bit of overkill just to protect the sills from scuffs from my wellies. It would be cheaper to fit new standard sills if i ever wanted to remove the chequer plate down the line.

3M helicopter tape will invisibly protect the sills from most scratches and keep the original look. Not much help though if sills are already damaged.
