Rayburn and the christmas turkey
Now this is not the usual sort of question for this forum but chaps and chapesses I need help. We are just about to replace our ailing Alpha range cooker with a Rayburn at great expense. The big question is what size turkey will fit in the oven? The oven is 42 litres capacity which is significantly smaller than our existing cooker has. So am I going to reduced to carving a large sparrow come christmas day? Can anyone on here with a Rayburn tell me what size turkey that have managed to squeeze in.
Apologies to all those who don't want to start thinking about Christmas yet but you will appreciate that this requires a bit of forward planning.

My Mum had a Rayburn in England, before we moved to Aussie in 1958, she cooked with it and from memory, I think it also provided our hot water.
Aga was in existance then of course, & probably was more popular, but Mum always said that Rayburn was the "quality" item for those who wanted "the best"'

Can’t help with the physical size of the oven. But remember you can get turkey crown, so you get much more meat for the size of joint, just no cavity for the stuffing. This is what I tend to buy in anyway.

We had a rangemaster double oven. Can get far bigger joints in Aga double oven. Narrow front but much deeper Cheers

Just measured mine, we have a 4 oven.

Main oven ( top right ) is

350mm wide x 250mm high and 450mm deep.

Bottom oven is slightly taller but has the grill element, and also not as hot as the top.

If you’ve never cooked a Xmas dinner for 7 with one of these, make sure you have plenty of wine/spirits/beer to hand.

By the time you’ve figured it all out with timings/ temperatures/ space and cooking on flat plates you’ll be to sh!tfaced to care Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Take a pair of gloves and a tape measure to your local supermarket and check out a few frozen ones.

Badger is absolutely correct- cooking with one of these is an acquired skill.
We have a Stanley ( also owned by Aga l believe).
We also have an electric oven.
The Stanley heats our house & water other than this over the years the only thing it has been good for is warming lambs or leaning on when I am absolutely frozen & I have come in for a brew.
Aga - a marketing triumph over execution of ability.

I think Aga’s / Rayburns are a bit Marmite. I know people who love them, I know people who have had them removed as they feel they are a waste of space. If I had the room, I would fit one tomorrow. My Brother-in-law had one. He loved it but it was an oil burner and it drank heating oil like it was going out of fashion.

Of course the obvious answer is to buy a 42 litre turkey ? Whistle

Our two oven Rayburn’s top oven has an opening of 35cm wide by 30cm tall if it helps. But we also have an aga in another house and would recommend you get an aga rather than a Rayburn for the cooking side of things. However if you are using it for heating too then you need a Rayburn. Ray
