2.4 Puma 2010MY running cold
Just picked up a 2.4, 49k miles on it. so far, 120miles in seems ok, however it wont warm up on the gauge with normal driving.

Symptoms are it only goes to between a 1/4 and 1/3 way up from cold on temp gauge. heater output would appear to match this in that its not puma hot more like a tdi heater.

Top hose above thermostat, heater hose and hose off back of pump are all 50deg. thats after 30mins driving and at 1/4 to 1/3rd mark.

Radiator is cool to touch at top stone cold at bottom if the max the gauge has been to is 1/4 / 1/3

Initially i thought it could be viscous fan so removed and replaced with known working - no change, repeated with another known working, same result too cold.

On a long uphill drag it will go up to half way but then plummets back to 1/4 or 1/3 within 1min of taking load off engine.

Rad is hot after this at top, cooler at bottom.

So i conclude that the thermostat is opening fully when she is up to temp (as rad gets hot and she doesnt get any hotter than 1/2way)

Its not the viscous.

Nothing visible out of the exhuast, not used coolant in my usage (120miles) of which 70miles was a motorway drive home

No air in system

So in essence its overcooled.

i am thinking a duff thermostat in that its leaking past and not fully sitting and constantly overcooling.

Would welcome your thoughts please. Cheers

Hi James, surely changing the thermostat is the best place to start.

Is there any possibility it has that waterless coolant stuff in it?
I don’t know much at all about it to pass much comment but just something I thought of.
Other than that sounds like the thermostat as you mentioned.
Have you tried bleeding it just to be sure too? Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

It's not running Evans waterless, it's running colder by 50% too. Waterless drops it 10~15%?

Thermostat is my thinking as I just can't get my head around why it won't get up to temperature unless it's been overcooled and thermostat is the only failure I can think of that would cause this.

If gauge was reading low and engine was too hot then it would smell hot and measure hot on thermometer.

If coolant pump had gone or air lock it would be too hot and I wouldn't see the drop in temp on gauge once it Had been worked.

Nor would I see stat working and heat change across the rad.

Same for a partial obstruction in cooling system. Cheers

Sounds like failed thermostat (open position), or no thermostat fitted to me.

Just picking brains and i concur, But rad is cold until shes worked hard to temp, then rad is hot at top, cool at bottom. I am confident it's in there. Just not working correctly?

IS there any other reason why she would run cold? Cheers

Semi faulty water pump? Some of them aren’t great quality, seen el-cheapos with plastic impellers that get loose when warm- real head scratcher that Laughing

I always find the infa-red thermometers are great for these kind of faults and are very cheap on amazon and the like- great tool for the box- and it’s got “a fricken lazer beam man” Laughing

have been using the infa red thermometer to test to date.

if impellers were the problem i would have slower coolant flow and then hot spots i would of thought, it doesnt seem to do this. Cheers
