Marsland Chassis are much better than Richards and I’ve fitted many of both.

Nick,
I've heard others say the same but what makes the Marsland a better chassis?

Thanks for the comment NickMc

I was looking at a much better vehicle, only to realise they are very costly and I will probably replace everything anyway.

This is a low mileage 300Tdi (>90k miles) with a SW 110 County Spec VIN.

Make sense, or am I trying to convince myself? APK

It’s not four plates welded together, has the genuine stiffeners, has the four right angled strengtheners that run along each corner, the mid rails are stepped over, the reenforcement plates are spot welded the entire length of the rails, they have correct crushable safety zones built into the front end. The quality of the Galvanising is better. Overall the fit and finish. They’re type approved for insurance. The rails are made by GKN.

That’s just my personal opinion though.

Quite a big difference then. Good to know, especially when dropping that kind of dough.

Trying to convince yourself, seen it many times Laughing

Get a piece of paper and write down what all the second hand and new panels will cost you and the labour and shipping for them. If it was me (and I build them for a living) I’d buy one already done and save myself the heart ache and cost- or buy one with a lot of money spent and spend a little to make it what I want. With the price of doner vehicles now it’s not cost affective, especially if you’re paying someone else to do the work.

You can buy something with a Galvanised Chassis and bulkhead and doors already done for
A lot less than you’ll pay for a Chassis, bulkhead, doner and doors.

I read an article a while ago when I was looking for my defender.

The prices were getting silly and I needed something solid and presentable, as it’s my sole vehicle used for work.

Anyway, after reading the article / blog, I seriously considered buying a local knackered (and rotten) TD5, trailering it to Poland and having it restored there.

However, after a lot of research I concluded that whilst I would have saved on labour, the hassle, time and cost of the parts made it unrealistic for me.

Hi, on page 800 there are several part#s for the Defender 300 tdi bulkhead
http://www.retroanaconda.com/landrover/par...94-923.pdf

May I know what the difference between MUC6686, MXC9012 vs MXC9012 is please?
I can see there is reference to AA271213 and AA271213 but what do those refer to?

What is the difference in bulkhead spec between the aircon and non-aircon version?

I see some adverts on ebay for 90 bulkheads, is there a difference between the Defender 300Tdi 110 vs 90 bulkhead?

Is there a Richards/Marsland type recommended manufacturer/supplier for 300tdi galv bulkheads?

Many thanks!

Kind Regards, APK

Came across a company that strips Defenders down to bits and then rebuilds a few LHD luxury vehicles for the US.

They had a few intact unmolested tdis in the yard and said they will be stripped down shortly and any unused bits will be up for sale.

Refused to sell one to me intact.

Couldn't help but feel very sad to see what was happening. The versatility of its design has lead to its reducing numbers.

Looks like soon there will be no original spec ones around Sad

That's easily one of the most rotten defenders I've ever seen. To me it's been in the sea launching boats or similar.
I'd put money on every bit of aluminium being corroded and oxidised as well as every steel bolt being seized.

Unless you intend to just use the chassis numbers to make a "new" one i'd walk away. Your going to end up replacing every nut and bolt, every bearing, every fitting.

Otherwise your going to end up with a lovely new chassis and bulkhead with a load of tat bolted to it 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Thanks gazman

Marsland said they would engrave the VIN so yes, great as a 'new' one with matching VIN and Engine numbers. Did the maths with all the parts etc, even found a tdi bulkhead, tub and doors but I can't afford the labour cost quoted by the restorers at this point. Neutral APK

Dont thank me mate, I'm Censored in your dreams. Well on this one anyway.

Keep looking, the problem for me would be it wouldn't matter what it was on that one it's going to be corroded. Be it the rings for the head lights which will leave rusty stains on the headlight surrounds if not replaced, to every bolt to the chassis for every Bush, joint bracket. It's where the cost is hidden.
Even stuff like the wiring loom can be corroded and prone to breaking of it's been on the sea and that's a major headache.

My uncle bought a range rover years ago not knowing it had been used to launch boats. In the end he cut it up and turned it into a comp safari racer as it was just never right 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Hi APK

My advice, for what it's worth regarding selecting someone to do the resto for you. Firstly, you get what you pay for so I would never recommend going for the cheapest quote just because it is cheap. However, one of the biggest expenses you will incur will be the cost of labour - so think about travelling elsewhere in the UK to a specialist with a lower hourly rate. I move house all over the country every couple of years with work, and have paid between £40 and £65 per hour for Land Rover independent specialists in different areas.

This may prevent you taking part in the work to learn, but could save you thousands of pounds.

I have extensive experience of Ben Stowe who runs Black Paw 4x4 in York. He is moving away from routine servicing and repair and focusing more on restoration now, as that is his passion. He has won numerous awards for Series restorations, but can handle all ages of vehicle - a lot of the owners in the Camel Trophy Club use him to restore their vehicles, which I think says a lot.

My father in law takes his Land Rover to 2 brothers who work out of a spit and sawdust workshop in the Lincolnshire countryside - I doubt they would remap a Range Rover Sport for you, but they could rebuild an analogue Land Rover blind folded!

Finally, don't rule out asking your chosen restorer to source the vehicle for you. Ben at Black Paw did this for my Dad - he wanted an early Series 2 and told Ben his overall budget, then Ben sourced a vehicle and refurbished it all within budget.

Hope that helps!

It really depends what the OP wants.
From my own perspective, I wanted a Censored Defender because i knew i would be replacing everything because in the end I wanted to have a better than new Defender, built on Richards Chassis, heh.
The OP will be paying for labour Shocked and the cost of the i wish him the very best of luck ! Neutral

For restorations i can recommend Ben Stowe at Blackpaw 4x4, he worked on my Defender earlier this year and did an amazing job. He is based in York and is a true enthusiast and really gets Land Rover restoration/budgets
