Wireless warning light
Hi,

Every now and again I forget to shut my garage door, and up until last week I have been very lucky. I guess I should consider myself lucky they only took a couple of power tools!

It is a sectional electric door. I was thinking that I could fit a PTM switch so the door rests on it when open and have it control a light in the bedroom. The idea being that when the garage door is open then the light would be on and I could not forget to close it overnight. The garage is detached but less than 20 metres from my bedroom.

A quick google search has discovered no off the shelf products for this.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how I could go about making it? I ideally want it to run off the mains. I am slightly familiar with electronics but not so much that I want to go hacking into the motor and gear positions to achieve this. (unless it's really easy!)

Thanks in advance

I thought these were pretty common electric garage door options. I've had a few in the past that came with my garage door lift kits. Essentially just a mercury-type switch mounted to the door with a radio transponder that turns on/off a light plugged into the mains. The box plugged into the mains can also be configured to chime as well.

The mercury switch is battery powered but lasts for several months (18-24 months).

That’s exactly what I need but I can’t find anything online. Either a mercury/Reed/ptm switch could all be fitted. All I find online are the wireless WiFi stuff for the home or remote security lights. I’ll keep digging around ☹️ 2002 110 td5

You could use a Luminite Wireless Easy Switch here https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/He...index.html if you fitted some kind of reed switch to the garage door, this would send a wireless signal to whatever device you need in the house be it a buzzer or a light.

James, I'm sure I've seen an industrial door contact used to form a circuit which illuminated a light. If the contact was made when door open rather than closed could that work?

I believe mine are chamberlains as well but a different model. Came free with my lift units.

James I had the very same problem. I bought and fitted a go go gate2 it sends a message to my smart phone when ever the door is opened and can be controlled from anywhere I have a signal.

Best money I have ever spent. You do need to have a internet signal (Wi-Fi for it though) mines a stand alone garage away from the house so I burried a cable and set WiFi up in the garage)

If your garage is on the same ring main (or shares some of it), you can use those power-link kits to give a resonably good network feed into the garage, save having to use wifi/exteders/burying cable

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have decided to have a go at modifying one of these

I will put switches in the open and closed position of the door and wire hem into the remote. 2002 110 td5
