Hi there, I've got an oil aga, it's the only cooking appliance I have, no microwave, kettle, toaster. Run it all year round. It can be a bit warm in the summer, but then I live in Scotland so not too much of a problem
 Also it's nearly 50 years old, and despite running just fine it could probably do with re-insulating which would stop it giving off so much heat.
Mine has a back boiler so apart from really cold days of the year I don't need the heating on. Aga is enough to heat the water and keep the kitchen warm. Log burner does the lounge. Probably need to factor in servicing it twice yearly to keep it running well. Last couple of years I've been doing it myself, and I'm no technician. Once you work out what ropes and wick you need, and the general principles it's simple enough. Plenty of help on the web. And be prepared to get a bit messy when doing it... Having had an aga for 6 years I can't imagine not having one now. It's not the cheapest think in the world to run, but worth it for me. |

Another suggestion would be to buy a Calor Gas cooker and a couple of 47Kg Calor bottles, simple pipework to outside.
Electric AGA's are eye-watering expensive a single oven circa £2,500 double oven circa £3.500-£4.500. Whereas a Calor Cooker top of the range will set you back about £250.00 Two large Calor bottles will last all year even longer depending on how much you cook. depends really on the budget to buy. i wouldnt have an electric style aga which i think is what you are eluding to?
calor gas bottle cooker is good suggestion. i have oil fired aga, run it all year, service it myself once a year, it does my hot water too, uses 4-6L a day, we use that and log fires through the winter to keep house warm. benefits, you always have somewhere to dry stuff, it cooks much better, you never forget to preheat the oven, kitchen and rooms above are nice and warm, keeps residual property temp up. downside it uses oil daily! servicing is quite straight fwd. Many thanks for the advice, electric aga is not on the cards currently, heard they are horrendously expensive to run.

I run an old Reyburn on oil. It has a wick and therefore does not need electric to power the blower, just something to think about if power cuts are likely to be an issue. 80" 1948

We run a Stanley oil fired “Aga” & an electric hot plate & oven.
Stanley gets turned off in the Summer & we use an electric immersion for water. IF I was starting from scratch I would go calor gas either off 47kg cylinders ( we use these for our cabins/kitchens on site) & we pay about 20 quid a cylinder delivered OR a Calor tank. Agas & hot summers really don’t go together in my experience Guy May your life be like toilet paper ; long & useful. |

We also run a oil Aga but we turn it off in the summer because it gets too hot in the kitchen and use an electric cooker and hob. The Aga is also expensive to run but at least in the winter it heats the room as well as cooking.
I would favour the Calor Gas cooker and hob as it’s cheap to install and economical to run compared to oil. I would run this from 2 x 19kg Calor cylinders on an automatic changeover valve, ie it runs on 1 cylinder and changes over to the other one when empty allowing you plenty of time to get a refill. Same here. We have an oil fired aga and have to turn it off in the summer or it gets much too hot but we also have an electric oven and separate hob so it's no problem. However I think we will put in a calor gas hob soon for wok cooking and also change our oil central heating for air source. Still trying to decide whether to keep the oil aga or swap for electric or wood.

We were looking at installing an oil fired aga but the more we looked into it the electic total control aga is a great option. Every oven and hot plate can be turned on individually, you can set it to slumber to give a gental radiant heat in winter and you also get a controller with it to turn the ovens on and off twice a day.
