My first 110 didn't have a roof rack fitted and I never needed one! My second 110 (TD5) came with one fitted and I hated it! Above 50 mph on the way home, it felt like the hand of God was reaching down and dragging it back!

I sold the roof rack on eBay and bought some roof bars and (a) these are much less noisy than the roof rack, (b) they can be carried in the back on occasions when they might be needed.

I've never had the nessesity to revert to a roof rack, but I guess it depend on the load...

My Hannibal full length comes off my 110 each winter, tidied up and stored below the garage rafters. Don't really notice any difference unless I go above 65 mph when its on. I really don't have a need for it during the winter, i take it off just in case some lowlife scroat tries to have away with it, otherwise it would stay on all the time.

I must be honest

I have no need for a roof rack
It fitted because I love the look of it , and I barely get it above 50mph on my commute anyway, so never really noticed any noise or detrimental effect to my mpg

I like a good roof rack - they look really cool. I've had all sorts of racks over the years - Brownchurch, Safety Devices, Patriot - but for practicalities I've managed with two or three roof bars on my last three Land Rovers and will do the same on my current one.

I guess what I'm getting at is if it's causing you an issue then ask yourself if you really need it or could you manage with roof bars? If the answer is yes then accept the compromise (noise, fuel economy or whatever) or sell it and pocket the cash difference. Darren

Lots of mention of the roof-rack being 'useful to stand on'. Not sure what you all get up to unless I have missed the point of Defender ownership Whistle

Ignoring practical and fiscal reasons, (as we all know, Defender ownership is neither about practicality nor frugality), I think 90s look nicer without.

I use mine as a mobile platform for cutting the hedges. Much quicker than a ladder ! Plus the 40’ pneumatic mast is fixed to it.

So I suppose if you need to ask the question you may as well leave it off..
