On a some what more serious note.

Don’t think it’s exhaust related. My bet is on the serpentine belt. Worm belt and Or tensioner arm. Have you checked that already? a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

What’s a worm belt? Did you mean a “worn belt”?

I took the fan cover off this morning and fired wd40 in all the pulleys / bearings I could find under there and it was exactly the same. I would say it sounds as if it’s on the turbo side of the engine. I’ve currently got the downpipe off as I could see a puff of smoke coming up from the flange.

There doesn’t appear to be any sooting or anything mind and I’m not sure I can hear the noise anymore either but that may just be down to the noise of the engine running without an exhaust. Which does sound quite nice by the way!

Fixed! It turned out to be the joint between the turbo and the downpipe.

There was no sooting but as Tdi4 said I guess it takes a while to show and this has only been happening for less than 100miles. My vehicle has got a non standard downpipe and I had to make some bolts up. I don’t think you’re supposed to use exhaust sealant but I put it back together with a smear of it and tightened it all up with the rattle gun. Job done!

You may laugh, I did that to find out if my turbo actuator was working. You do get some strange looks driving around with no bonnet Laughing

Slight update on this one which might help others

The noise reappeared after a little while, most noticeably after a long run when the vehicle was really hot. I think just doing the exhaust bolts just altered the tension on the turbo.

Turns out it was the turbo to manifold gasket after all, you can see the sooting on the old gasket.....

It should be noted that you couldn’t see any sooting outside the flange itself. Will be fitting a Nakatanenga one

Mine's doing exactly the same thing. How easy is it to change that gasket? And is it going to do my car any harm by not fixing it immediately?

Very easy fix.

I would do it sooner than later. But you haven’t leave the car on the side of the road and immediately call the workshop.

Can it hurt the engine? The answer is no. But if it’s gotten bad enough (the leak) you can get an under boost dtc and go into limp mode. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

I wouldn’t say it will do any harm, I ran mine for a bit while I waited to have a new gasket to be delivered, and then finding the time to do it, so it was probably a couple of weeks or so.

It’s easy enough to change, although a bit fiddly if you’ve got a bunch of bananas for hands like me. I’ve changed the turbo on mine before so compared to that it was easy. I can’t remember exactly but I think you can get away with unbolting the turbo and the bracket to the block and slip the new one in.

I would thoroughly recommend getting the thicker gasket. It’s expensive but worth every penny. Not had any problems since
