I occasionally have a loud beep a bit like a warning that i've left the lights on. Now, the Defender doesn't have that facility so i'm stumped. It happens perhaps once a month and I don't really explore why it happens. TBH it happens to my Mrs more, but i've heard it. It's the same buzzer as the fuel warning buzzer and it sounds for a second just as the ignition is turned off. No idea.

As for the feint electronic bleep described above, i haven't heard it, but i have the normal EGR chugga chugga.

It was quiet in the street when I got home from work this evening, so I turned off the radio and the heater fan, opened the driver's door and window, pressed the clutch to the floor, and switched off the engine, and...

YES, I have a beep! Shocked

I have never noticed it before (probably because of all the other noises) and to start with I had to move my head around because it sounded a bit like a very quiet ringing in my ears. But it was definitely a 2 to 3 second beep. It is so quiet on my Defender that it probably isn't noticeable with the door and window shut.

As you say, it sounds as though it is coming from the offside of the engine compartment, where I didn't think there was anything that could beep.

This needs more investigation! Perhaps we should offer a small prize to the first person to identify the source correctly.

I am sure the noise you're hearing is from the electronic servo that controls the vanes on the turbo.

Most modern fuel injected cars have an electic stepper motor to control idle speed, which also make this noise. Anyone ever played with servos on a radio controlled car? These also make a similar sound.

Since the noise these make is quite high frequency, people with hearing loss (age related?) may not be able to hear it.

Regards,

Gary.

It certainly sounds as though it is coming from that area. On my car it is a continuous high pitch whistle/beep, and it sounds just like a tinnitus-like sound in the ear. If I wasn't specifically listening for it I would not have registered it as anything else. I think you are very probably right with your comment about hearing loss - it is in exactly rthe right frequency range to be inaudible to older people or those who have damaged their hearing through prolonged exposure to loud music (or driving high mileages in series Land-Rovers).

If I can enlist a volunteer to operate the key while I have my head under the bonnet I will see if I can confirm the source.

Greetings, 110 landy with 1800km of off-road driving - I am now also "chucka chucka" - very concerning and hardly a confidence builder! Explained post shutdown noise and indicated orginating from turbo region to agents - clueless... Yet I got this thread on first google search

Don't worry about the chukka chukka sound - Its the EGR resetting itself. Perfectly normal.

Every Puma I've driven makes the chuffing sound after engine shutoff. Can't say I've noticed a beep but there again I'm a bit Mutton and Jeff from shooting anyway. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
