Some platforms have a drilling package built in and do their own drilling and workover, just hiring a firm that provides labour etc. But alot are too small or the drilling package has been removed. With the newer generation Jack up Drilling rigs they can skid out their drilling derrick up to 90' aft of the transom, also transversing side to side. They can then drill either new wells in empty slots or re-utilise old slots by sidetracking the existing well. The rig can also change out the existing production (completion) equipment in existing wells that have failed tubing or failed pumps. Alot of smaller Oil firms are buying up the older assets and with new 4D seismic are finding small pockets of oil and drilling new sidetracks into the new targets. Mostly now we run electric pumps (ESP's) into the wells once complete as the formation pressure has fallen below that needed for the well to flow naturally. The rig actually floats and is towed out to the site, we then run anchors and with the aid of the tugs position it alongside (often as close as 1-2m) then pin in position with the legs. Jack the hull out of the water, test the sea bed by filling up with water, then jack up to working height.
New platforms generally have the wells pre-drilled over a template, then put the platform in place, then the rig comes and ties them back to surface and runs completion equipment. Original Member Pie n Pea Club. 110 HCPU Tipper |

Just to follow on from Willie's her are some fixed platfroms with drilling rigs onboard.
This is Brent Charlie and Brent Delta in the background, there's team in the office above me working on the Delta Decommissioning. Click image to enlarge In order to get to the rigs in the photos you have to board a fixed wing from Aberdeen to an old second world war airbase in the Shetlands calles Scatsta and then they are between 45minute to 90minutes chopper ride dependant on the choppers routing. In total it takes between 3-4 hours to reach them in good weather from the time you check in. And when you get a checkin time say 05:30 am it means you turn up to checkin at 05:30 am none of this be there an hour before crap. Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

out of interest do the generators run off fuel shipped out to the rig or do they use the waste gas you see being burnt off? BM52

They are diesel driven which is shipped out.
Mounted on to the other end of each engine is a 1 meter square alternator  Russell

 , Alot of the early diesels were dual fuel and could run on gas or heavy oil. Most of the platforms run turbines that mostly run produced gas occaisonally switching to diesel.
The rig we have on hire currently burns around 5000 gals diesel per day dependant on how much equipment we are using. Some Stats, the block is currently reaved with 10 lines on 1 7/8" line and can pull 1,600,000lbs with three 1000hp shunt motors, the top drive is 1600 hp and can turn pipe up to 120 to 200rpm and 60,000lbs torque continuous, The mud pumps are 4 x 2200 HP and can pump at +/- 500 gal /min each at up to 7400psi. We can rack back 30,000 ft of Drill pipe weighing +/- 600,000 lbs. It's just a big toy Original Member Pie n Pea Club.
