Fuel tank vent line (tdci)
Filled up to brim this morning, went to pay. came back, diesel peeing all over at the rear end from between the main tank and my aux tank. checked the feeds from the aux to the main tank and the bleed valve, all ok. after a minute or so no more fuel coming out.

stuck it on the ramp at my mates place and found what looks to be the tank vent line point downwards. If I stood under the rear diff to the left looking up at the left of the tank, the pipe was just visible and fuel wasnt coming out of it but it was wet. the pipe is about 5mm in diameter. so my question is presumably this is the end of the vent pipe? and shouldnt this be clipped up somewhere? It looks vulnerable to water ingress when wading. Anyone any thoughts?

Thanks again spud. Not sure why I couldnt find it.

I saw your explanation of extending it. The problem I have is that due to the aux tank I cant actually get at it to add a hose or to snip it back etc. Also because its the highest point, whats obviously happening is that it's twisted towards the front and is at the highest point, so if I fill to the brim, some fuel will run down it, then along the chassis rail and just sit in the tube. Mind you I guess that's not a massive issue since in the event of a lot of expansion it ll just push it further down the pipe. hmm

Have not lifted my carpet from the rear so I do not know how the floor is fixed in place. If it's riveted you could remove the floor and gain access that way but it seems like a lot of work. I just extended mine to stop water ingress but yours seems to be fairly o.k. where it is. I have no doubt that someone on the forum will be in touch with a solution. That extra tank is a great idea, wish I had thought of it! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I think it needs extending, particularly if wading. The tank is a safari equip one for a 90. gives me an extra 125 miles ish. no way i d try to fit it myself, it took them a long time.

I had the same problem and posted on this last year. Stealer changed the breather valve at the 12k service. They advised it was common problem. Do 3-4 a month, Faulty batch of valves..... Etc..... If your in warranty get the stealer to fix it. I must admit the pipe does look very short on the latest defenders. Paul

how are you guys ataching your breather extentions ? i want to do all mine, gear box, axles and tank up through the snorkal, not because i'm planning any DEEP wading but more a case of more is better when hydro lock or emulsified EP 90 for my diff's, the issue is the join will be the weak link so i dont want to do a half arsed job with duck tape, any ideas,

p.s i was just thinking of adding on to exsisting ones and not removing and replacing with longer.

Existing ones? as far as I know there are no existing ones (unless you've fitted them). The gearbox breather is a problem, I'm fairly sure you have to drop it to get the breather on there.

Also not sure how you would get them into the RAI without compromising the seals between wing/pipe/airbox. Why not just run them up into the engine bay then cable tie them there? Unless you're planning on going in water which is going to come up to bonnet height inside the engine bay, which will undoubtedly lead to other issues anyway?

big mike, i dont know but i assumed that the gear box would have a breather, there are two in the engine bay and at first look they seem to be front axle and gear or transfare box. regarding the snorkal, that was paid for when i thought the dealership would do a quality job Embarassed so its a slot together snorkal with no sealent on the joints, i think when i extend the breathers and reduce them into one tube and go crazy with some good quality sealent it will be an improvment and one less thing to think about if i end up arse deep in water.

not sure if it's any help but there's a pic of the new breather in one of the pdfs in my gallery (Fuel Tank Removal about P7). Mine's the old style and I clipped it up out of the way behind the plastic panel in the n/s wrear wheel arch.
