United Kingdom 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Keswick Green
Toxic smell from exhaust
Hi all,

My defender has an extremely strong and toxic smell from the exhaust. This is my second TDCI and the last one did not smell like this. It smells very chemically
The smell literally wafts even on a still day and quite a few people have now mentioned it ! It's not sulphur so I shouldn't think it's the cat but has anyone else had this experience ?
It's a 2.4, has been serviced recently and is running completely standard with no mods. Drives perfectly but I am suspicious as it's considerably faster and more grunty than my last !

Any ideas hugely appreciated

Rich

Hi Ian thanks for the reply.
How would I be able to tell ? Am I right in saying that the decat pipes are made to look like they do have a cat for MOT etc ?!

Probably decat as mentioned.
One of the reasons why, performance or not I've left mine as it is fully in-tact.

In the mean time, if you run some fuel additive such as Millers diesel you may find it'll improve and clean up a bit. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

For info, I have run my 2007 TDCi both with and without a cat during the time I've owned it and there was no perceptible difference in smell (it has had the same slightly acrid dieselly smell all the time).

Most decat pipes do not have a 'fake' cat, so if you look at the pipe immediately below the flange which secures it to the turbo, a cat will be visible as a substantial can-shaped object, whereas most decat pipes are plain pipe. There is a heat-shield fitted round the cat, so it is better to look up from underneath rather than down from above.

Some owners however "decat" their 2.4 TDCis by drilling or knocking the ceramic matrix out from inside the standard cat can. If this has been done, you will not be able to tell unless you remove the pipe from the vehicle (or remove the turbo) and look down the pipe.

I'd agree with blackwolf and there's certainly no toxic smell from my 200 tdi (no cat) 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

the Landy came from the Balmoral Estate and I would therefore be surprised if it had the cat removed ! I'll have a good look though.
Is it a symptom that could be related to the injectors or pressure valves on the fuel rail ?

I was hoping to get a BAS tune at some point but want to make sure everything's in order before I do

When I start my 2015 2.2 Puma from cold, it totally stinks... of combusted diesel.. not a nice smell at all.

Once warmed up, no such 'issue'...

DPF and CAT fitted... Rolling Eyes YOLO... You Only Live Once...

our ones at work, when they have been sat idling for long periods followed by short sessions of low range low speed work have abit of a chemical smell to them. it clears with time on a good run.

all std vehicles with CATs

What sort of journey times are you doing when it smells? Cheers

My van with the 2.2 (and cat and dpf) has a bit of an acrid chemically smell when cold. Assumed it was just a feature of the engine!

My 2.4 Defender just smells of diesel smoke.

But i do remember my old Jaguar X-Type which had the 2.2 Puma engine, sometimes smelled as you describe when it was cold, ok once it warmed up.

I always thought the X-type had a car type Diesel engine, not a puma! That could be useful regarding common parts if so

Thanks for the tips. Im going to go down the injector route I think. Get them all tested etc . There are absolutely zero fault codes showing , was expecting to see one or two !

The X-Type and the Mondeo mk3 both used the Puma engine. You also find the Puma engine in the PSA/Fiat vans (Relay/Ducato/Boxer).

The X-Type used a 2ltr lump or a 2.2ltr (without DPF prior to 2008). So not much is going to fit a 2.4. The 2.2 X-type is closer to the 2.4 in the defender than the 2ltr is.

The mk4 mondeo however switched to the PSA DW12 engine, used in the various Citroens, Puegeots, the Freelander2 and Jaguar XF, so don't cofuse those as they're a completely unrelated lump.

Thanks all for you replies.

My gut feeling is that its an injector leaking. I changed all the glow plugs last week (a bit of a fiddle!) to see if that cured my hard starting and smoke. It has and now fires on the button with no engine wobble and no noticeable smoke. They must play a more important roll than on the older engines as I imagine the ecu switches them on occasionally for emissions or similar.

Anyhow back to the point. I removed the inlet manifold to access the plugs and was horrified by how much carbon had formed inside, were talking a fairly serious amount , I cleaned it all out with a screwdriver, bottle brush and engine cleaner , then ran a can of EGR cleaner through the system , I can now hear the egr self cleaning again on switch off, something I hadnt even noticed was missing until I heard it again !

I removed the glow plugs and number two was drenched in black liquid , finer than oil and smelt like diesel , two others were wet and only one was dry !

Are your opinions that this is a leaking injector or something more serious ?
The landy is tunning sweet as a nut apart from the very strong smell come out the back end and light small amount greyish smoke on acceleration . Its a bit better after a few Miles but still a bit stinky .
