I'm fed up with searching round the garage for tool boxes and always finding the wrong one so I need a proper tool chest that my tool collection has substantially grown since I've owned 'Tonka'!
I'm no mechanic, I know there are some real talented guys among us.... ![]() ![]() Anyway I'm in the market for a tool chest for the garage on wheels to keep all my toffee hammers in! I would of course love a Snap-On but I'm just not in that league. But I have come across this on eBay - any thoughts gentlemen.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351-US-PRO-TOOLS...SwgY9Xc5ze ![]() Click image to enlarge Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated ![]() The longer I live..... Cheap boxes are cheap for a reason, draw bearings etc will be low quality and not run smooth. Halfords currently have some good deals on their toolboxes and with a trade card you can get more discount

... but by the same token, if you're only using it half a day every other week then you really don't need top flight gear designed for constant use.

I've got one, think I paid £75
It's worth £75 (not more) It's alright, I've had to fix the drawer runners a couple if times but I like for the money. |

Biggest issue with the cheap ones is quality of the drawers, and they're often really shallow, which means you can barely fit anything in!

I have the Halfords black ones ('industrial' range I think?) which works well. They're often on offer and good value with the trade card as suggested above.
Could do with a couple more deeper drawers so might expand the stack, but otherwise they're very good and have stood up well for many years now. |

Just like we had at school JustFX.
Hours spent turning the metalwork shop upside down trying to locate the last metal rule! Truly a great (and cheap) idea, but only if you have spare wall space and a bit of patience with the black paint ![]() |

I've got that exact one. My wife paid £50 from Halfords around Xmas.
I've got a slightly bigger one she got me about 10 yrs ago and a big one from their professional range. The one from 10yrs ago is still holding up fine, they are not the biggest in the world but if you don't full it with loads of heavy stuff it's not the end of the world 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car) 2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r |

I have had Snap-On boxes before, excellent, but then you pay a fortune for them. I have a Costco tool chest, cost me £500, easily the best box i have ever bought. I'm not a professional mechanic, I was once, but that was 20years ago - god i feel old, i'm only 40 you know!!! I still love my snap-on gear though ![]() Cheers Andy |

I got a set of the halfords professional ones (the red ones, not the industrial one). Well actually i have 3 sets. The oldest one is 20 years old, it doesn't have ball bearing runners, and it's a bit of an effort to use heavily loaded drawers. it's a US made one by Waterloo Tools i think, the paint is a lot redder and hasn't faded.
Later ones they obviously switched to a chinese supplier, these have ball bearing runners and are absolutely fine, the only criticism of them is the paint on the chinese ones is a bit more pink and prone to sun bleaching. Avoid the cheap £80 ones as they tend to be built to a price, the draw bottoms tend to bow when you load them up and rub on the stuff below. However Halfords regularly do deals on their better ones, which is where i got two of my sets. Where you basically get both top box and roller cabinet for £150ish. I'd also agree costco do some realy nice stainless steel ones. That being said even the cheap ones are better than having everything chucked in a random assortment of plastic boxes in the back of the garage. |

After a lot of research i bought this Hilka chest- http://www.screwfix.com/p/hilka-pro-craft-...inet/27590
In the light of the research i had a number of requirements: - black - no extra big drawers as they would be a waste of space for my range of tools (same applies to cupboards) - extra front-to-rear depth. Most of the cheaper cabinets were very mean in this respect. - including drawer liners and pad on top- the cheap ones don't I've had it 6 months and am still happy. It easily holds all my car tools and my bicycle stuff in the top drawer. Cheers, Guy. |

I bought one from Clarke over 10 years ago, nice drawers which open and close easily.
