Extended warranty or selective parts upgrade for reliability
So, my 2.2 Puma 110 is reaching the end of it's 2-year Land Rover Approved warranty. During that time it's had a replacement fuel tank breather, fuel pump plus fuel lines and injectors, a new wiring loom for one of the rear doors, a new windscreen frame and windscreen 'hinges', a new gearbox oil seal, failed indicator 'flasher' unit, and last week it split the intercooler to throttle body air hose. I have been sent the LR extended warranty details and although it seems expensive, based on the last 2 years of ownership it would probably be good value!
An alternative to the extended warranty might be to spend a similar amount replacing the bits most likely to break with better quality items (for example replace the turbo hoses with decent silicone hoses) and get breakdown cover. I've fitter Wipac crystal headlights and a loom, so at least the light switch should be OK. Question is, what else would you replace on a defender with 50,000 miles on the clock with a budget of say £600 including labour, and would there be any reliability benefit at all? Is there anything that isn't likely to break?
Having been shown the warranty record for the vehicle before I owned it, I think it was already about 20% new parts when I got it (gearbox, clutch etc)....

My 2 years are also about to run out and have been sent bumf regarding extending.

Anyone got strong views about further extending warranty?

Only needed an oxygen sensor replacing so far.

Edit ... I forgot ............. was told at MOT time, that I had a slight leak on a swivel joint and to book it in before my 2Y warranty was up. A couple of months later when I got round to having it done, they surprised me by doing both!

It's one of those things that if you don't take out and need you'll be kicking yourself for not going for it. By equal measure it is very expensive peace of mind! 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I've just extended mine as the 2 year warranty is up.

Mine has only had a new swivel and rear door wiring harness in the two years I have owned it. I have taken the warranty out as peace of mind. The other option was to put the £69 or so a month into a savings account and try to dodge the bullet for 18 months or so hoping that nothing goes wrong so you have a bit of a slush fund for the unexpected.

It seems expensive, but I work on the basis that I have already forked out a shed load of money buying the Defender, I realised before purchase it would be 'unique' in its maintenance requirements so I decided to take the hit.

Now, I can see the sense in changing the bits that are likely to fail with a better quality alternatives. Tough call. I suppose it all comes down to what is affordable to the individual?

Going by my experience, I'd expect clutch and clutch hydraulics (slave and master).

Also various transmission elements building up to backlash issues.

Check for unreasonable corrosion and leaks. Wipers behaving?

Swivel seals. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Anyone know how strict LR are with Warranty if service plan hasn't been followed?

My 62 plate has only done an easy 17K and last July declined a "big" service and made do with a "small" service.
