Wales 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Stornoway Grey
Focal ibus 2.1 sub fitted yesterday. Original plan was to fit it under the cubby in a mud uk sub locker which I had purchased ready for the job.

Got into fitting but just couldn't get on with the cubby on top of the locker as I found it too high. So on to plan b which was a lot more work but a much better outcome for me personally.

Annoyingly the space between the second row seat striker brackets was too narrow by about 5mm so we slotted the bolt holes by a few mm either side to allow them to shift outwards slightly and provide clearance to accommodate the ibus 2.1 in between.
The speaker signal wiring looks a bit messy in the photos but has since been tidied similar to the power wiring so it now goes out through the floor via a grommet, inside conduit externally and back inside at the rear of the seat box.

The sound now is incredible! The components provided good clarity and top end but still the system was lacking mid and low range as well as volume. I'm big into music and audio so this is something that has been lacking in my Defender from day one so very very happy with the result

A bonus that I was not expecting is that the front component speakers sound even better amped via the ibus 2.1 than they did amped through the Alpine head unit. I don't really understand why or how but this arrangement has taken the front component speakers to the next level! Even with the sub turned off.

Hi Hank
Was the harness that came with the iBus long enough with the rear seat location or did you have to extend it ? You mentioned running the wires externally in conduit ... where did you bring them back in to connect to the head unit ?
Thanks
Tony

It was long enough yes... Just!

I ran it down the side of the dash centre console, under the carpet and over the front seat box, then through the floor at the top/rear of the seat box just in front of the seatbelt receiver bracket (shown circled red). Then it goes under the rear floor and back into the cabin at the rear of the sub to be plugged straight in. I used a depinning tool from amazon to remove the sub connector molex plug in order to keep the holes in the floor as small as possible. Also fitted grommets

Can get some proper photos on the weekend if required, until then I have the following...

New brakes built up to fit all round...

Would really like to fit a Pioneer 4x4 complete hard line replacement kit but they don't seem to list one for TDCi / ABS. Will have to contact them.

Looking forward to fitting these when the weather breaks

Defender developed a squeaky aux belt recently so seemed time for a new one. 80k on the original LR belt which I thought was reasonable

Nice easy job, was half expecting it to be a pig

Whilst I was there I removed the idler pulleys and tensioner and repacked their bearings with grease as they had gone a bit dry. Also cleaned/degreased all pulleys and rolling faces

Nice squeak free running Thumbs Up > 110 XS Double Cab

It had sometimes confused me why I couldn't get my sidelights to illuminate on their own.

From the forum I came to learn of the dim/dip "feature" and was keen to remove/bypass it

There are a few ways to do it... unplug engine bay connector, use jumper wire, fit LR bypass relay YWZ10003L (£30!!) but I decided to modify the existing relay.

Some steps should anybody else want to do this...

Remove the big pink relay from the board under the steering wheel and unclip the cover from the base

Cut/desolder/remove everything but the two necessary pins - these are the two that remain on the left hand relay below

I managed to source a bigger GT2256 turbo from a 3.2 TDCi

Externally it looks to be physically very similar to the factory 2.4/2.2 GT2052. Manifolds are the same, same hole centres, bores etc. Turbo outlet diameter is the same etc.

Plan is to build a Hybrid turbo by fitting the 56mm compressor side from the 3.2TDCi GT2256 to my 2.4 original 20mm hot side resulting in a GT2056

The 3.2TDCi GT2256 has a six blade compressor wheel vs the factory five blade

Below are some side by side comparison photos.

Hybrid turbo built up and fitted and initial impressions were not great! But Pete Bell provided me a tweaked map to provide the extra fuel required to match the extra boost and it really came alive. All in all a good outcome, especially considering the new turbo was under £100 and only took a couple of hours to fit. To be completely honest though not worth it if you're looking to pay £1000 for a hybrid turbo

The below image shows the standard 52mm turbine wheel compared with the larger 56mm one

Seams to be leak week

- Leaking AC condenser. Replacement sourced from https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/363436234249
- Leaking intercooler (Alllisport). Replacement sourced from BAS
- Leaking heater control valve. This will be the third replacement I have fitted. Went for a genuine JLR part this time rather than the cheaper ones available online
- Oil leak spotted underneath... Not sure where it's coming from yet. Have degreased in an effort to better locate the source. Possibly sump gasket or a PAS hose union.
- Cash leaking from bank account. Source suspected to be Land Rover Defender
