Yeah it's a fairly easy swap as lots of people are doing it now. Existing cooling pack will work and then it's just a case of ECU and wiring.

I'm planning to run the 6 speed BMW 'box with an adapter to the LT230. I'd thought about running the R380 but I think it would struggle after a better turbo and a remap.

I'll be swapping for a 1:1 transfer box ratio as the BMW 6th gear is actually lower than the R380 5th. The transfer box change will bring it quite close to Puma gearing so 2000 rpm in top will be approximately 63mph Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Indeed Thumbs Up the 204PS version. I was going to go N57 twin turbo but it was so expensive that I may as well have gone for a big V8.

I've considered a V8 for a long time but as its my daily vehicle I can't really justify something that only does 15mpg on a daily basis. The M57 is a good compromise as it sounds nice, is quite good on fuel, is very cheap to get hold of and can be tuned for quite respectable power. I'm not going to go mad with it, but a hybrid turbo and some tuning should see about 300bhp and 650nm of torque or there abouts. Thumbs Up

I'd choose a tuned M57 over an LS3 every day of the week. Suits the Defender perfectly. WARNING.

Be following with great interest!

The 6 speed auto or manual?

Could be a nice conversion instead of a 3UZ V8 Instagram @defender_ventures

Cost so far is nothing. My cousin gave me the engine and gearbox out of a car he's breaking. I'd imagine it'll be about £1500 all in, which I'll be able to recover most of if I sell on my engine and gearbox.

Great stuff! I don't have family like that sadly. My cousin wouldn't even dream of giving me anything like that at all. My pals would though. In return in helping me put it all together Very Happy

Are you going to be doing custom mounts, or will this lot just bolt straight in? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I have a very close knit family so I'm very lucky in that regard Thumbs Up

I'm not sure what's happening engine mount wise yet. I'm going to attempt to not cut or drill anything so I would imagine I'll have to do some fabrication. I plan to use the active BMW engine mounts if I can Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

good stuff, last thing you want to be doing is cutting, that you don't need, the metro lads Christ were a nightmare! " you need to cut this", "you need to cut that" "you need to do this etc"

Me I got that Censored off with it, that me and my dad did a dry fit on the subframe. it all fitted as though it was OEM! we didn't need to do anything at all.
Later found out, from a metro racing driver, that I could have did the wiring loom my self, with out paying £70 quid. He said I could have told you the pin layout if I knew you were doing a vvc conversion. Only 6 earths on the loom needed to be moved Rolling Eyes

I would do another engine conversion again, but i would make sure that the support and parts were at hand. If i knew the hassle i was going to have, i wouldnt have even gone anywhere near metros again. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Yeah, I'm lucky in the fact that the M57 is a popular conversion for defenders so it should be pretty smooth sailing Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Nothing has happened with the M57 yet. I've got it on an engine stand ready for partial stripping, inspection and cleaning (with a few upgrades along the way).

Whilst the 90 was in the workshop, sheltering from storm Dennis, I did a few little tweaks. One of them was to rubber mount all of the central locking actuators so that it doesn't sound like you're slamming the gate shut on a jail cell when you lock it Laughing

Now it locks with a gentle click (a bit like my parents L322) Cool 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I didn't actually, basically I just put rubber grommets in the holes and a washer behind the screw head. Effectively isolating the actuator from the metal completely Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
