This is a widely held myth, unfortunately. Roof lights are perfectly legal if wired to come on with the main beam (like any spotlights). It's only when they can be switched on independently that they don't comply. When I fitted my lightbar, I modified a standard Defender lightswitch (the off/side/head stalk switch as fitted to the left of the column) so that it became an on-off-on switch with the centre position off. This is mounted in the unused position on the right of the column (so there are now two stalk switches each side) and is wired so that with the switch pulled towards me the lightbar comes on with main beam, with the switch in mid position the lighbar is off, and with the switch away from me the lighbar is on irrespective of the other lights on the vehicle.
It was a simple job, works a treat, and looks "factory". |
