Top work! Looks great!
I’m looking to do this conversion myself but right now trying to work out costs etc. like you I’m looking to get as much as I can from one place. But I’m having difficulty finding what I actually need to source.
I have a 300tdi 90 and would like to keep the r380

Do you or can you point me in the direction of a list of all parts required so I can build my shopping list.
I’ve done loads of searching but everyone’s conversion is different and starting to lose my mind a little, haha! Messaged mw for a quote but unfortunately not heard back yet.

Any info would be greatly appreciated Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Thanks, there is still the odd thing left to finish off conversation wise but overall it was fairly easy to do.

From memory I had the following in the kit from Max Wiseman :
M57 engine, P38 bell housing, M57 service kit, ecu with custom harness that allows retention of 300tdi instrument panel, tdci throttle pedal, double diaphragm clutch, single mass flywheel, alloy adaptor to suit input shaft length, alloy radiator and plumbing, engine mounts, exhaust crossover pipe to suit standard exhaust, fuel pump/pipes, vacuum pipes, steering pipes. I also had to buy various wiring sundries to make the existing 300tdi loom look neat.
I felt it was easier to buy everything from the same place as I wasn’t sure exactly what I needed!, Max was very helpful if I had a query and the kit had a pretty good installed guide

Thank you so much for that! Really helpful, had no idea that I had to change the bell housing.

Just want to get it all worked out so I can firstly work out a rough cost and get everything ready first rather in bits. Thumbs Up

Hi Ib73

How did you mount the TD5 rad, did you have to cut off the bottom radiator mounts from the 300tdi ? how does the bottom of the Td5 locate.

Thanks

Shane

Hi Shane,

Yes I had to cut the 300tdi mounts of the chassis, the td5 had plastic mounting lugs moulded on the sides , so I fabricated some L shape brackets up which connected the bottom of the rad to the mounting bolts of the wings ( I think)

Hope that helps

Thanks Leigh, that's brilliant. plus looks easy to locate, thought I'd be faffing around with measurements.

Hi Leigh, I’m (yet again) seriously considering this conversion, just wondering what are your thoughts on the conversion after a few months since installing?

Hi, yes it’s definitely something I would do again. Had no major issues since fitting. A couple of minor ones being that the TD5 rad can’t cope and it’s needs a hi performance ones. Can’t put it down to a specific cause such as a hot day or if I’m towing. The second one is that I need to fit a decent size pre filter before the pump. The one I’ve got on now is only a cheap one and is prone to getting clogged.
Maybe if I was doing it again maybe I’d opt for a different manual gearbox, the current r380 is fine atm as I’m not one for hard starts etc however the gearing I feel could be a little bit taller.
The engine makes the car more usable as a daily if needed, which is what I had to resort to a few weeks back when my A3 had a coolant leak.
Hope that helps.

That’s great that you’re happy with it.
For a performance radiator, do think the likes of an Allisport td5 or similar performance brand td5 would suffice, or do you think a bigger radiator altogether is needed?

As for gearing, do you run a 1.4 or 1.2 transfer box? If the former do you think a 1.2 coupled with an R380 would achieve the results your after?

Sorry, should have mentioned that I have the Discovery transfer box already fitted, but still find the 1st and 2nd a bit low - still perfectly usable though. People seem to use the Ali sport td5 rad from what I’ve read, so that might be one option 1999 300TDI 110 CSW BMW 3.0
