Interesting question. I have a pair of factory heated XS seats from a MY2015... same thing. Nice and toasty to start for about 5 minutes then they seem to just drop off in temperature to almost no heat, almost as if they turned off.. If I leave them on, occasionally there's a warm burst for a minute, then gone again. If I turn the seat off, and back on (with about 30 seconds between switching) still doesn't come back as hot as when originally turned on.
Curious to see what other peoples experiences are, nobody out in this neck of the woods with factory heated seats to compare with. it's a Landrover thing... my renovation thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic40792.html |

My 15 plate XS is the same.
Nice and toasty bum for 5 mins then it cools down. I fitted take off XS seats to my old 90 with Waeco bum warmers, much better. |

I thought the factory seats have a thermostatic switch off?
My interpretation is that a cold seat and cold bottom combination means they heat. After 5 mins or so, the seat has heated itself, and also your rear end, therfore switching off. There's very little chance of a seat cooling whilst your sat on it, therefore the heaters don't have a chance to switch themselves back on again. |

I would guess that would depend on where the thermostatic sensor is, and the type of switch being used.
I'm using a simple on/off Carling switch, which says on until switched off. I would imagine the stock LR switch powers on, but would be run through a timed relay possibly?? it's a Landrover thing... my renovation thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic40792.html |

There is a little round button in the middle, bottom of the seat back.. you can feel it if you look. That is the thermal cut out..
I know because I poked mine and squeezed it together / broke it! 1953 80" 1987 mini city e 2011 90" |

So once you broke it.... what happened? Did the seats still heat up and just stay hot? it's a Landrover thing...

slightly off topic...can I buy the male / female connectors for the wiring to connect the seat wiring to the main wiring??

it stopped working completely. I felt it was a bit uncomfortable and tried to push it into the seat foam a little.. the round disc then was pushed in and that broke it. yup, so seems they all behave the same. I wonder if there's a way to recalibrate the thermostatic switch so that it kicks in earlier. All other manufacturer's heated seats in my experience maintain appropriate temps well, wonder if they work with a similar system thus a switch from another manufacturer could work in the LR system? Do discoveries use the same system yet maintain temp ok?

I recall reading somewhere the seat heats itself to somewhere around 38 degrees. It then switches off. When the temperature drops to somewhere in the 20s it turns back on to reheat. Mine does this and is a new 16 plate. Hope this explains it
