Handbrake Relocation
Dear All,

First of all thank you for allowing me to join.
Next,
This might be raking over old coals for some but please bear with me.
I am extremely interested in relocating the handbrake and have seen the threads already in various guises.
I am fully aware of what is needed and have already purchased the handbrake.
A few of questions if I may.
1. How the hell do you get the old cable free from the old hand brake? I know there are clips but how the hell do you free the think rubber end?
2. I dont want the handbrake right next to the seat. What I had in mind was modifiying the cubby box and losing the closest cup holder and and mounting the hand brake in that location, further over and slightly more forward.
3. Has anyone done that or does it need to be located right next to the seat?

I was going to do this a while ago but went a different route with the cubby and don't think it will fit now. Anyway, I felt this link gave the best instructions, also check out his other mods, the scan guage is fantastic, he is a member on here so may well chime in.

Regarding the positioning, as long as there is enough cable, it is not obstructed, the action of the lever is OK and it does not interfere with the gearing levers I don't see why you cant put it where ever you like.

You can back off the shoes of the handbrake which should make it easier to dismantle it all as you will need to reset it anyway when the new lever is in. As for the lever sitting into the cubby box area, I think you will struggle as there is a cover plate under the cubby itself so not much structure to bolt to. I've relocated mine next to the seat and when it's down I don't even notice it's there, it's a very worthwhile mod. There's a couple of pics in my build thread. Ray

I've done this mod. It makes life so much easier without that lever sticking in your leg. Just a 20 minute job after getting the cubby box out. No need to touch the drum or even the cable. Just need four new holes. Used spacer washers under the main bolts.



Then block off the old hole with a bit of scrap plastic and sealer:



If I did this again I would put the handbrake a further inch back, Just my preference.

Thanks for the links.
Been going through them, some nice mods.
mk1collector, nice spare wheel carrier. Some nice person reversed into me, stuffed the carrier, the door and the O/S body capping, then drove off. It must have been a lorry. Luckily the spare was undamaged, how I dont know.
getting back to the handbrake relocation.
To all,
I was thinking of having a reinforcing plate made, possibly 2 to sandwich the new drilled panel to stop it flexing.
What have people done to cover the old hand brake mounting area?
I can see different plates/covers in place in the pictures.
I was going to use the base of the old hand brake as a pattern and just bolt it in place.
Is that what you did mk1collector?

"Anybody done this mod with another model of hanbrake...having difficulty getting hold of range rover series handbrake for other than silly money?the bloke in the blog states his hb is a series ranger over item but looks like ones on ebay from discovery2

Certainly Discovery 1 and probably Discovery 2 are the same unit bar the trim colour. Darren

yet this is a discovery 2 on e bay ....note the tube protruding out of the base of the unit.

and this is supposed to be a range rover classic..

with no tube protruding from the base and the more central position of the unit on the baseplate!

anybody shine a light?Im assuming people have used the original defender gaiter as well?

Anybody got any close up pics of their new unit in situ?

edit .. the tubular section appears to be for the cable adjuster i wonder if its vital to stop the cable catching? So the bottom handbrake is not a complete unit?

P38 handbrake works fine also and can come with leather grip and gaiter, we use a 40mm alloy angle front to rear under the seat box to provide a good degree of stiffness.

I used a disco2 handbrake on mine, it's not a difficult job.

I too used a Discovery 2 handbrake. Straightforward to connect. I have an auto 90 with an Ashcroft centre console and it fitted in between that and the seat no problem. I made a reinforcing plate to go underneath and it's solid.

Watching with interest .....I think the hardest thing is picking a position for the handbrake between the cubby and your seat base.....there is not much room and some pedant of a MOT might say there is not enough room to get a decent hand round the lever! Anybody got any pictures with seats and cubby in place with hand round lever?It shouldn't also obstruct the high low lever!

Thanks i have seen that and it is comprehensive but im not sure by this picture below that the lever is not obstructed by the high/ low lever when a hand is around it?
