Puma difficult to start
Hi All,

I have a 2008 110 2.4 Puma which is difficult to start. It turns over and over for a fair while before actually catching and starting - usually accompanied by a large cloud of smoke which is probably unburnt diesel. If it is stopped and started again soon after it usually starts easily.

It has been fine in the past but the vehicle has been tucked up in the shed for 4-5 weeks while I got round to changing the vacuum pump. There was only about a quarter of a tank in it so I filled it up a couple of days ago to make sure there was plenty of fresh diesel in it. Once it's going it runs ok although maybe a little rough for a while.

Seems strange the leaving it parked up has caused these problems.

Anyone have any ideas?

Dave

Just a quick bump for this thread as I nearly didn't make it to work this morning. It took three protracted cranking sessions to get the vehicle started.

There was plenty of smoke coming out of the exhaust while the engine was cranking but would not fire.

I have drained some fuel off the filter but it seems to be 100% diesel with no water in it, so doesn't look like water in the fuel. Seems strange though that this has happened after the vehicle had been sat (in my shed) for a few weeks.

I have a nanocom that I haven't had chance to plug in yet but will plug that in when I get home. Any ideas to consider while I wonder if I'm going to make it home or not?!

Cheers

Dave

Could it be an air leak with air getting into the diesel line?
Never had this with my Puma but have with other Landrovers.

This might explain the need for cranking.

Have you read any codes? I'd be checking the heater / glow plugs and associated circuit.
The plugs continue to heat after the engine has started and without them they do run a tad lumpty for a while.

Mine smokes a wee while but always starts, but ditto on above advice >> first target for checking are the glow plugs. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I would bet the problem can be limited to (one of) the injectors or their gaskets. I do not think it has something to do with glow-plugs except your ambient temperatures are extremely low. In that case a faulty CHT-sensor would cause similar problems.
