rear ARB balljoint pins taper angle
Does anyone know the taper angle of the balljoint pins for the rear ARB mounting on a Defender?

I have fitted a genuine take-off ARB to reduce body roll on my DC, which has never previously had one fitted. It works well, but the holes in the brackets welded to the axle casing need opening out very slightly to allow the balljoints to fit perfectly. I suspect that 9 years' worth of rust and crud have reduced them slightly..

I believe that balljoint tapers are usually either 7 or 9 degrees and I just wondered if anyone knew for sure what was used on the Defender before I break out the tapered reamers.

Thanks.

Are you using genuine LR ball joints? Because would rust eating away at the taper not eat away at it evenly? 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP

If you're stuck you could always measure the ball joint taper with a vernier and calculate using trigonometry.

Just a thought if you were feeling mathematically minded today Smile

Yes, genuine, but rust makes a smooth surface un-smooth, so the balljoint pin doesn't go as far into the hole as it should.

Indeed, but the taper is slight, probably around 1 to 1.5 in 12. Measuing this accurately over such a short length (or more specifically, accurately measuring the length between diameters onm a taper) is difficult, and a very slight inaccuracy in the measurement will make a significant error in the calculated angle.

If, as seems likely, no-one knows, I'll either drop a line to someone who makes weld-on brackets in the hope that they'll tell me, or just try some different tapers in a piece of gash plate with engineers' blue until I find the angle. failing that I clear the hole up carefully with a file - it's only an ARB after all, not a steering joint!

I was hoping for the lazy and quick approach - to ask someone!

Thanks all anyway. Thumbs Up

ARB bush taper spec is 11.42 Degrees inclusive angle, 1 in 10 taper (per side).
Diameter sizes at either side of the bush are 14.27 & 17.42mm

You're welcome.
We don't make them any more, since January. Sad
