Removing the steering wheel
I want to remove my steering wheel (1999MY Td5 CSW - 36 spline wheel) to fit an after market wheel and to improve access to the column switch gear to do some work. I've tried the wiggle-waggle method and using a small puller and no luck. It just won't budge. Is there a knack to it? Am I missing something?

Thanks. 1999 Td5 110 CSW

They often do get a bit stuck on the splines, try loosening the nut and undo it until the threaded end of the column is just below the outer end of the nut and then give it a tap with a hammer while pulling upwards on the wheel.

Otherwise a puller is in order.

Did mine recently, used a puller, that wouldn't do it by its self.
Sprayed plus gas to see I that helped.
Rocked it side to side while pulling (Leaving nut on!)
Nope no joy.
Ended up with a club hammer knocking under the wheel with the puller on.
Eventually it popped off. 110XS CSW TD5.

All this hammering, make sure you leave a few threads on the nut or you could recive a steering wheel to the face. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Tried all the above - still no luck.

So I put the puller back on and tightened it up and left it overnight. The steering wheel was on my seat in the morning.

Well, in anticipation of the new after market steering wheel, I'm struggling to remove the original LR steering wheel on my 2013HT. I've tried the above tips but without success so it seems that I now need a puller.

Could someone recommend, or provide a link, to a puller that would fit. There seems to be a wide variety of types available and I'm still not clear what this would attach onto to provide the leverage required.

Any help would be gratefully received. Bow down

It looks like you have no tapped holes in the wheel centre boss. Mine was the same when I came to remove my wheel.

I couldnt fit a normal puller, so had to drill and tap two holes in the boss so I could use a puller. I think Landrover in their wisdom decided to stop putting the tapped holes in the wheels and save some money.

I have seen a few without the tapped holes in. The wheel can be very hard to remove no matter how much banging and pulling some refuse to give. And the only way is to use a puller. Its the taper on the wheel and steering column that makes it so tight, a bit like a taper shank drill, after its been off once subsequent times dont seem as tight.

See the pics for ideas on what to do.

Regards.

Thank you, the lack of holes on my steering wheel boss explains everything now. I really appreciate your detailed reply and can now see how a puller would work once I've drilled and tapped a pair of holes.

Hi Peter D,

After you remove the center nut, it may require you to give the steering wheel a little persuasion to get it off. Had mine off for a few times to do this and that and never needed a puller.

I hope this helps.

Remember also when you refit the wheel not to overtighten the nut. I always use a little anit-seize compound (copper slip or similar) on the splines and taper before refitting. It makes subsequent removal so much easier.
