If the clutch springs are failing you will usually get vibrations from the driveline. One of the reasons that there are springs in the clutch driven plate is to absorb the torsional vibrations inherent to modern high speed diesel engines.

That’s what I eventually learnt about the springs. Mine had become ineffective.

Due to my remap I was pushing much more torque through a shagged clutch. Massive transmission vibration. I’d lived with it long enough, plus it had started to clunk on idle. Was only a matter of time before it wrote the flywheel off too I reckon.

All sorted now though.

Hi Roy, yes we removed and checked the friction plate, the springs did not rattle but i was and i am not convinced they are 'right' . Only thing holding me back on a new clutch is i was hoping to put an auto in it and was waiting on the latest update from Ashcroft on locking the torque convertor in all gears of the 4 speed and was searching for feedback on the JE 6 speed. All input welcome!

Sounds like an issue with clutch plate or uneven friction material 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

Whatever it was it’s now fixed. I did have the flywheel off to do the rear crank seal so maybe that was slightly skewed.

The clutch friction plate springs were very very rattly, the slave cylinder bearing was also very worn, I’m guessing from the rattly clutch smashing against it. Now replaced with a lovely LOF clutch. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

I was advised that the Road spec would be more than sufficient for me, I had the power spec in the basket until Luke told me it wasn’t really required.

Luke the owner of the company is a real good guy and was more than happy to help and advise wherever I needed it. Even down to what bits I needed and the tools required to do the job myself.

The actual unit itself is lovely. Good pedal feeling and a nice and smooth take up of drive. Still in the bedding in phase, only about 100 miles as it has an organic construction. But so far I’m enjoying the drive.

The clutch pedal is ever so slightly lighter now as well I think. Which is a plus and will hopefully keep the wife’s leg happier. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Thank you. My reason for asking is that my current clutch has now been in for 80k miles and is fairly horrible, although not rattling it is very evident that the springs have taken a set and it provides no torsional damping, so a new one is on the cards very soon. I was looking at the LOF options and trying which is the most suitable for my application.

My Defender has a mild map but is always loaded to around 2.5 tonnes gross, and the "power" option seemed to the be most appropriate, although as of this morning I can't see it listed. Since I imagine that the "road" option is the nearest equivalent to a normal LR clutch, probably this would be fine for me.

I have to say that the prices seemed very reasonable to me too.

Clutchfix have a long history of making clutches and not just for Defenders.

We send their clutches all over the world and we do not buy just one or two at a time Laughing

They love a challenge when it comes to clutches. This clutch was a 17" double clutch from a 1950's vehicle that they were remanufacturing last time I was in their factory. The clutches can't be bad as they are made in Yorkshire Razz
