Heater inlet plug/drain - how useful?
Following condensation problems when the heater blower was used, plus rusty water ingress into the passenger footwell from the heater vent and the discovery of a small amount of rusty water sitting in the heater inlet because the rubber plug/drain was blocked with silt, I have removed it and can't see any point in putting it back (unless I plan to do some serious wading - which I don't).

Any comments?

Rob

D1 or d2 air con or not? My d2 air con drain tubes which run down either side of the gearbox were blocked leading to water filling up and coming out of the foot well vents when going round a corner. I cleaned them and took the little bit of rubber on the end off and not had any problems since

My 90 doesn't have the bung fitted as when i cleaned it it popped out rolled out the engine bay and down the drain. I never put it back and haven't had any problems as I don't do deep water either but I have a snow cowl fitted that keeps a lot of leaves and debris out

mine is out with no negative effects.

I turn the fan off when wading as I've had it over the bonnet anyway by which point it's swamped anyway! It probably drains faster afterwards! 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

I'd try and get to the root cause of the water ingress, maybe fit a cowl on the intake and run the heater regularly to avoid any condensation rusting things from the inside out.

The first thing you should with a utility Land Rover is remove the fanny valve and throw it away. I've had no detrimental effects over the last 22 years and no damp air (apart from the time water bubbled out of the windscreen heater vents after particularly deep windscreen high wading 😀 ).

just been searching and this thread pops up about removing the "fanny valve"

where exactly is it and does this help with interior steaming in heavy rain??

The reason you get steaming up in heavy rain may be due to water being inside the heater box. To allow this to drain is a drain beak, Winn is on the lower side of the heater duct that runs from under the wing grill, to the heater fan assembly. If you run your hand along the bottom of this duct, so above inner wing, you discover the mentioned item, then give it a squeeze or pull it off and see if water gushes out.

(Delete all this) I hadn't realised it was a general query and from a resurrected post. Now who feels like a fanny? Donald

There is more than one of those vales in the ducting or at least there is on the Puma.
There is 3x in total.

I keep mine in, but keep them clear.
If you take them out, yes you'll not get clogging or moisture but instead you'll be drawing in anything from the engine at a lot.
And in the summer, that'll include some warm air too. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧
