Way back I cycled with my Girl Friend (now Wife) through the Picos Mountains in northern Spain for a month and we absolutely loved it, you just cannot believe that your in Spain so do your planned trip but take in this area, from Santander take the A 8 then N 621 through the Picos de Europa National Park... 
Good luck trying to leave the Picos...  it will be fantastic in a Defender...

Too ambitious for a week? I figured I could do some driving very early in the morning, so 2-3 hours on some mornings at 5am-7am was easy....
I know my gf wants somewhere warmer, hence heading to the Southern part of the country as well as northern. |

I think so.
I found some roads which were great but progress was VERY slow - I ended up doing 14hrs almost non stop the one day as such I'm dubious about your ambitions. If you were simply looking to get there and back then may be. making a holiday of it I'd say definately 2 weeks minimum - plus the ferry aint cheap but I guess spread across 2 weeks it's less so on a pro rata basis. I sure it'll be a great trip but in my opinion it could easily end up being a waste of money as you just won't have the time to enjoy any of it. |

Seriously, if you want to do that sort of mileage in a week, you will not be doing much seeing of the places you get to whizz through en route... 
You might be better cutting out the Southern half of that trip and see a bit more of the places on what's left...
Depending on when you're planning to go, some of your route can be extremely 'warm' from June onwards...  Rog...

+1 for the Picos de Europe
It's only a few hours from of Santander and probably less than an hour diversion from your route., definitely worth visiting during daylight hours. I went down the west side, but I'm sure the east is nice as well. The views are amazing, especially if you can get the cable car to the top of the mountains, search for Teleferico Fuente Dé.. Allow a good day to drive back from Seville to Santander. As others have said, you should take in the PIcos. If a week is all you have I would suggest spending it in the northern part of Portugal and Galicia. More than eough to keep you happy for a week, plenty of green-lane type driving, less touristy, far less "car time", and great scenery. We did a very simialr route to yours back in 2009 though we did cross Portugal using a very large percentage of tracks. We also visited Gibraltar on the way back. We did, however, take 16 days for the trip

We spent 2 weeks in the Tras as Montes area of Northern Portugal last summer and did maybe 0.01% of the tracks and lanes there. It really is a green laners paradise 😊

Looking at that map and distance of 2352 km in 21.5 hours??
That is assuming you will average almost 70 mph. 2352 km is about 1500 miles and in a week that is about 220 miles a day or realistically 4-5 hours driving per day. When travelling I expect to cover 100-150 miles per day on average on a longish trip so that trip is at least a 2 week trip. The alternative is to spend one long day at the beginning of your trip and blasting down south as fast as possible. Then spend the next 6 days pottering back up north. Do NOT plan on a long hard day at the end of your trip to catch the ferry as that is a disaster waiting to happen! Another vote for the Picos

I have driven from here to Portugal a few times.
I wouldn't try to do that in less then 2 weeks. Like some of the others have said stick to the north of the peninsula and you'll have a better time. It will take you a day to drive from Seville to Santander. It took me that long in a D3. Regards Fabio |

We've decided to go for 2 weeks now, and take a little longer, and we've also adjusted the route. We will be taking the ferry to Santander one way, then going from there:
Santader -> San Sebastian -> Pamploma -> through the Bardenas Reales (this area looks fascinating!) on to Barcelona, from there through to the French Riveria, and Chamonix, and then Eurodisney on the way back before returning via Eurotunnel to London. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bardenas_Reales So... big distance, we'll be doing some off road bits eg the above, but nothing drastic, what sort of things should I be checking on the car before we go? It's had a service 2500 miles ago (1st service), I'll be giving the car a good look over before I go and crawling under making sure it all looks right, is there anything really specific I should be checking? We're mostly in normal populated areas obviously as it's Europe... but I'd like to make sure I've fully checked everything before we Click image to enlarge go. |
