Puma swivel grease level
As I suspect a swivel grease leak on the right (offside), I tried to measure the grease level.
Somewhere I read it should be about 5cm when sticking a tent peg into the swivel housing.
Is that correct?
As you can see below, I only have about 1.5cm but it's about the same on both sides
(My 2015, 40kkm).

Here are some pics of the process, maybe of use to someone:

0) returning home from holiday and after a (careful) pressure wash:

carefully removed dirt and waxoil-like rust protection wax...

1) axle stands, no need to remove tyres, 3/8" ratchet extension:

2) turn wheels to full lock to move the swivel ball away from the plug, note bit of rust on the thread, looking inside you can see the CV joint's ABS ring - and some grease - good Smile

3) tent peg down the hole - is that enough grease? similar on the left (nearside)

4) filled up with just a little grease, but will keep checking

5) a short trip showed no leak yet, but there's still dirt
note the swivel seal Land Rover put into this late Defender: it's missing an outer seal to keep the dirt away from the inner one... I've already ordered new ones and even the 3€ allmakes seal does have that additional lip...

Just whack a load in, any cv grease works, buy it in cartridge grease gun style cases, its cheaper and easier to add. To check it with a tent peg it would have to hot enough to be in liquid form surely? Cheers

In my experience they only leak when one or both bearings are worn/wearing leaving a gap between the seal and cup, or when the cup gets damaged/scored.

Well worth checking the bearing preload is set properly using the shims as per the workshop manual.

As for the grease, pointless measuring it as it's not in liquid form. When empty you use one sachet/tube of one shot grease. Maybe go for half a tube as it looks like you've lost a fair bit. Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon
