Checking Gear & Transfer Box Oil Levels
Is there anyway of checking the levels in the boxes, without having to drain the oil (with a MY12 Puma)?
Reason being that doing the whole draining process in the middle of nowhere, lying in the sand, will more than likely contaminate the oil and don't normally carry 2.5 liters of the various oils.

I've trawled through the search function and draining seems to be the only answer.
Some have mentioned using a piece of wire, but some say 2mm below filler plug, others say 50mm.
Most of these posts are also a couple of years old.
Hoping that someone out there has developed a foolproof method.

You can't check the level in the gearbox.
The procedure is drain it,then refill with 2.4l of the recomended oil.
The transfer box you can check,just fill till it runs out of the filler hole.

The transfer box also has a specific capacity and is not filled as you'd think to the filler hole. After a lot of work particularly on the transfer box they are both oil tight.......for now. So, they were both filled to their correct respective capacities therefore should not require constant checking. The gearbox is a pig to fill anyway without a pump, so whenever I have reason to remove the shroud around the gear sticks I remove the filler plug to check, and all appears well....for now. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

I'm sure I saw a thread on here that someone had measured the oil level from the gearbox filler, and said with the correct measure of oil, it was 3mm below the filler plug.

But I would just change it, put the correct amount in, and assuming no oil leaks, assume it's still OK to next change (at least that's what I do - change all fluids every couple of years....) Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Not a big deal, but very confusing.

LR says that LT230T and Q transfer box has oil capacity of 2,3l and
that the oil filler plug is also the level plug. This from service manual.

Now the Puma use also a LT230Q transfer box (LT230QRS) and has
oil capacity of 2,3l, but in the s-manual is said specifically that the
oil filler plug is not the level plug? Has LR moved the plug or what?

Could somebody explain what was the reason for this change?

I think due to the Puma engine being taller, the whole engine/GB/TB setup is not level, which explains why the filler plug is not the level plug anymore, even though the capacity remains the same. “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

OK, this would explain it. I'll check what is the difference in drive line angle,
300Tdi and Puma. As the Puma engine is tilted nose up and the fill plug is in
the rear, the oil fill in t-box would be slightly less. There is no mention in the
s-manual that the car should be rear up, tilted to compensate the drive line
angle and then be able to fill 2,3l. Or is my reasoning wrong?
To me this sound a bit theoretical, would this little less oil make a difference.
And then the gearbox fill spec is less that in Mustang that have the same? box.

Specially when you think about all the odd things that can be found in a Defender.
Out of the subject, I also wonder, what it is in these cars, they are so poorly built
and have numerous "stupidities" built in and I have 2 of these? Had a perfectly OK
Skoda 4x4 as daily driver, but it was so boring so sold it and bought a Puma for
daily driver. Probably I should have my head examined. Brgds,

There is about 4 degree difference in 300Tdi and Puma.
The Puma engine is 7 degree nose up and 300Tdi 3 degrees.
Measured comparing from front wing. Brgds,

My transfer box drain plug is leaking some oil. Nog much but it is leaking a small bit.
The plug seems to be tight enough. Recently the oil has been changed.
Is it common that they start leaking a small bit after changing the oil?
It seems that on a new plug there is some teflon sealing. Schould i buy a new plug?
And what would be the part number for this plug. It's a Puma 2011.

Normally they don't leak. I change transfer box oil at least
once a year and use same plug. The threads are tapered and
seal without any sealant. Be careful, you can tighten is so
tight that it can be very difficult to open.
But if it's leaking, you should drain the oil and see why it's
leaking. A new plug is one solution, but also a little Teflon
wrapped around old plug would probably fix the leak.
Look carefully that there is no crack around the drain hole. Brgds,
