Emissions/Smoking
Hello Team!

So, my TD5 failed it's MOT on friday thanks to emissions, scoring average of just over 5.

After a weekend of flogging, ragging and two tanks of V Power it's passed but barely, averaging 2.85 and it was pretty smokey having done it.

Quick summary: 2004 TD5, 75k miles, EGR blank and twisted Stage One map, K&N filter and Safari snorkel but otherwise completely standard. Just been serviced, had new MAF sensor as well (the old one wasn't functioning). Does about 6k a year with em some long trips in there as well and it's not driven too gently as i enjoy the power. Doesn't use any oil (or non-noticeably) and drives well I think. gets decent diesel, very rarely supermarket.

Anyone got any ideas what to go looking for or what could be wrong? I'm concerned it's all a little high emissions wise and there is something else more sinister going on rather than just a build up of soot.

Thanks Smile

Have you tried diesel additive such as redex?

It sounds like the injectors are carboned up.

Worth having a look for diesel additive, I think there is more powerful stuff than redex available, but might be trade only.

My TD5 has 172k and sailed through its MOT, doesn't smoke and doesn't use oil.

Cheers

Hey!

Yes literally serviced about three weeks ago, new MAF fitted. Re the injector cleaning, wondered about that but currently running few tanks of v-power through it, been advised probably best not to put both in at once as the v-power has additives in

Try cleaning the MAP sensor, the one on the inlet manifold, easy to do, remove it and give it a good clean with carb cleaner or similar, make sure your air filter is clean too. If that fails have a look at the turbo and inter cooler hoses, one might have split or collapsed inside.

Thanks for that. Yes I'll whip out the map and see what it looks like. Maybe some silicon hoses be no bad idea

Try this apparently what the dealers use.

http://www.forteuk.co.uk/product-detail/47...or-Cleaner
you can get it on ebay in a double pack turbo cleaner and injector cleaner.

my guy who maintains mine fills up the fuel filter with it and runs it neat through it for quick blast but it works well just in a tank of fuel.

Stopped mine smoking a lot.

TD5 EGR is a mechanical valve. How is a diagnostic computer going to tell you it's working Whistle

To the OP, check the boost pipe work for splits/leaks, as well as the intercooler. And oil ingress into the injector loom
Failing that, you may need it plugged in to check for any faults, and make sure all sensors are reading OK

Thumbs Up
