Oil leak to watch for
Found oil dripping from the front of the sump pan yesterday. On investigation the oil was coming from near the top of the engine and running down to the sump pan.

It looked like it was from the brake vacuum pump but underneath and to the rear.

Took the vehicle in to the dealer this morning and it appears the seal/gasket on the high pressure fuel pump, located just behind and below the brake vacuum pump, is shot.

Going in on Monday to be fixed.

It's an oil leak. Apparently there is an O ring that seals the pump to something and it looks like that has gone.

Problem is it is very close to the brake vacuum pump that also has a tendancy to leak but it is more obvious when that happens.

You saying that - when my brake vac pump went it leaked in two ways A) Exactly as you describe and B) the Classic spray pattern.

I recall the mechanic at Macrae and Dick mentioned something about another seal aswell as the pump's seal...maybe they did the two...maybe not...i can tell you i was lucky if stratstone changed the gasket Evil or Very Mad Mike

when I got "shiney" out on Monday I noticed a few drips of oil on the floor, checked underneath and it looks like there is coming out of a unit to the front of the oil filter on the nearside/right hand side (looking from front), then running down the engine mounts, onto the chassis etc. only a small amount, but does this mean I am joining the "vacume pump club"? -

It's 18 months old and has nearly 6,200 miles ... so it's about time something went wrong ...

I have changed the vacuum pump twice already - each time after c.a. 20 000 km.
The last one is supposed to be stronger - when leaks will need new gasket only. Janusz

I took shiney into the dealers yesterday and they confirmed it was vac pump seal - fitted a new one under warranty whilst inlooked at the evokes and rrs models.

Seems ok now

Would have been nice fir them to wipe the oil from the engine bay but I guess it's part of the oem anti corrosion system ?

Marshall’s didn’t clean any oil off my one when they renewed the vacuum pump, not that that surprises me. Still we’ve now had the chassis oiled for free! What I want to know, is who is going to clean all the oil off my drive?

That's what cats are for, you will find their fur quite absorbent.

Hay Bob,

Found a lot of oil blasted on to the heater matrix, & all around top of engine, up on to the under side of the bonnet, right side as you look from the front, it seems to be coming from around the belts. trying to put pics up. is this what you had?.
Very Worried!

Had two done on mine under warranty - one in a similar sounding place (near crank pulleys), the other to the rear of the engine - two gaskets replaced. THEN the brake vacuum pump went too! Also replaced.

I think our 110 is now about 15% brand new! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

Not the same as my problem, yours sounds like the brake vac pump.

Mine was not spraying oil around it was leaking from the fuel pressure pump gasket that is next to the vac pump and running down onto the sump pan.
When the vac pump seal goes it sprays oil all over the n/s of the engine bay.
