TD5 Clutch dual mass flywheel
I'm having the syncro's sorted out on my gearbox, and while the box is out I was going to drop a new clutch in, I've been advised to renew the dual mass flywheel as the same time, does anyone now if this is necessary or am I been conned into buying the flywheel, any advised appreciated please

What mileage?

Im guessing that if the mileage is so that your gbox needs some work, then yes youd be advised to replace the flywheel too. You can check how much play there is, im sure someone will be along shortly and advise whats acceptable, but I remember a quote from one of the tuning companies:

" If your having the clutch done, I think it's false ecomony to not do the dual mass flywheel at the same time. Especially if the mileage is 50,000 plus." 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

Just come back from picking my TD5 up from the garage after swivel/bearing work and we were discussing this exact topic.

It looks like the DMF on mine is on the way out (chattering and stalling in low box). I will get the DMF and clutch done at the same time. They said that if somebody asks for a clutch replacement on a TD5 they advise doing the DMF as well, basically the extra cost is the DMF itself.

They had a TD5 Disco that had only the clutch done and a short time afterwards it was back for a DMF, that starts to get very expensive with the labour costs.

In general it's a false economy not to. My Disco2 had its first new clutch at 130k miles, when removed the clutch was fine but the DMF was not - well worn. Remember the clutch only wears when you use it, the DMF is wearing all the time the vehicle's in motion.

So if your replacing the DMF, do you not also swap it for a solid one ??? Not there yet (fingers crossed) just intrigued for when I am Laughing Whistle

It was always my intention to do that, but there are many reports of drivability issues with solids. Equally of course there are many people who've done it and are delighted. I'd really want to drive one first.

My main complaint with the Td5 set up (apart from the awful R380 box) is it tendency to develop clutch judder.

My local LR indy place (Keith Gott, Alton) said they had a few solid ones made but were so snatchy they binned them.

I had my clutch and dual mass flywheel replaced a few months ago (simply because the spigot bush was squealing -'while we're there Sir') and it was appreciably smoother on the gearchanges afterwards.

Mines now all booked in for the end of July to have DMF, clutch, spigot bush and release bearing done Thumbs Up

Rear crank seal will be done if needed as well - most expensive bit of that is the new engine oil Laughing

Total cost from my friendly indy for everything apart from the crank seal was less then LR quoted just for the parts ex VAT Shocked

Valeo dmf and clutch being used and looking forward to getting rid of the squeal from the spigot bush Thumbs Up

Hope it all goes well Bob,

Ive just done mine on the drive,

Found that gearbox had given up after the 200000 miles that is had covered so decided to have a go myself!

Firstly borrowed and engine crane

I thought that this would be easier than getting the engine out

removed floor, exhaust, crossmember, props, door, bonnet, starter motor and steering wheel

used the crane to gently lower the gearbox and transfer box out in one

Luckily all bolts were kind to me and came out nicely

Got the gearbox onto drive (with very kind help of Bodsy) and discovered that someone in the past had left a cloth inside the bell housing !!

Used a pressure washer to clean the transferbox off before splitting it from gearbox

Purchased a good second hand box from Porny, thanks to him for that Thumbs Up

Put my old transferbox onto new gearbox,

Fitted new Valeo fly wheel, spigot bush and Valeo Clutch along with new clutch release bearing,

made a wooden support to help to align the gearbox to engine

I used a length of threaded bar cut into sections to align the bolt holes and act as rails to ensure the box went in first time.

All seams well with the car now, took it down to Slindon off road site with the Disco3Club bunch on their Hampshire Spectacular event (in this month LRO mag)

Hoping the gearbox will cover another 200000 as the last one did Question

Excellent job and pictures Thumbs Up

I must admit I was thinking of doing it myself but the guy who works for me, who is an LR fanatic, is in the middle of a 200tdi 110 chassis swap so he, and his engine crane !, are busy until the end of the year.

I was going to do the same as you, drop the gearbox and work from there - it has to be easier than engine out.

How long did it take you to do it ?

Good job there!

Although if I was just doing the clutch, i'd probably go engine out. I mentioned in another thread, you can leave most of the electrical loom connected to a Td5 and "lift & turn" it enough to get into the bellhousing. (gotta take the radiator out first though)

Cheers both,

Bob most of the time was stripping it all down, which I did on my own over a number of evening's and a weekend. I suppose if you really put your mind to it and had all parts to hand it could easily be done over a weekend. All in all from start to finish it probably took me a couple of weeks. But I took my time, pushing the car back into the garage each night and then pulling it out again. I enjoyed it all tbh and if I ever need to would do it again Thumbs Up

I actually found the clutch plate to be almost as new and the flywheel fine too but thought while it was all stripped down for peace of mind I would fit new. Like I say hope it will run for years now

Nice pictures. My first impression was - how the hell you are going to remove engine with the engine hoist this way. Mr. Green
But to the DMF - I have seen a Def 110 with solid flywheel and it was working, but in idle, there were big vibrations. My first question to the owner was - what is broken with the car. The difference to my Disco2 was so big. And after short time, solid flywheel was changed back to DMF. The idea for solid flywheel in that car started during clutch colaps aproximately 1000km from home, during a trip. But the vibrations were so bad, that the bullet proof flywheel cannot overdue it.
