Oh it's the Defender rattle
Hello all,

Having been watching thoughts on gearbox, diff, transmission, flywheel rattles addendum and finally decided I needed some advice on mine Laughing . As background it is a 2011 2.2 with 60k miles on the clock. The noise is not there when first fired up, but once running is really obvious every time I stop at lights/idle etc. As regards the box, engagement in all gears seems fine, albeit I have to feather the clutch with more skill than Senna to avoid a clunk on engagement.

Have sought opinion locally, but have had three separate answers:

LR Main dealer: No problem, it's a Defender. But I'll tighten the handbrake.
Local do-it-all LR guy: Clutch is on its way out need to change ASAP.
Local, well regarded mech, but who loves/owns a Defender: it the DM Flywheel.

I am at a loss. Big Cry

Can anyone out there in D2.net land give me a final answer. I have uploaded my first ever, most definitely not Ridley Scott, video which hopefully will add some clarity. I have to order parts in the UK and get them shipped over, (cheaper) and don't want to have to do it twice, or more, if I get it wrong. I know this isn't scientific, but any help much appreciate. Thumbs Up

Sorry about the video, was in (smart) work clothes....please go to the end where I depress the clutch. Ta Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

firstly to ensure you're not wasting your money.......

are they doing any road works at the end of your drive Rolling with laughter

sounds like the clutch to me. doubt it's the hand brake and my understanding is they don't have a dual mass flywheel so I'd rule that out too.

I'm waiting on getting mine replaced - whilst having it done I'm going to bite the bullet and replace the extension shaft (at the very least worth a look while it's apart.

hope you get it sorted.

and with regards to being a master of clutch control to prevent clunk I also know what you mean....for me it's intermittent thou ?

Answer 1 is wrong, it isn't normal and it isn't the handbrake (handbrake tends to make a knocking noise as you slow to a halt if tightened too much - it isn't that).

Answer 3 is wrong, because you don't have a dual mass flywheel (the TD5 does, but the TDCi has a traditional single mass flywheel).

It sounds to me like a severe clutch rattle, and I would be dropping the box out as a matter of some urgency to have a look!

If you switch off the engine with the clutch in (engaged, foot off pedal) do you get a short metallic rattle that is absent if you switch off the engine with the clutch out (disengaged, foot pressing pedal to floor)? This is a sure sign of a failing clutch driven plate.

With that degree of rattle on tickover I really wouldn't leave it any longer than I had to to investigate. There is a risk that the springs depart the clutch plate altogether and do significant additional damage.

Assuming you've checked to make sure there's nothing external that's loose and causng it as BW says you'll be needing to get the box dropped asap! Steve.

Not sure if the 2.2tdci in the defender has the same issue as the 2.2tdci in fords and jags but the front bottom pulley disintegrates and ruins tge bearing in the aux belt tensioner causing a horrendous rattle at idle. Usually worse by turning the air con on or loading the alternator heavily. Went on my 2.2 xtype and thought it was the dmf!

Not likely to be affected by pressing the clutch if it was pulley related, I'd have thought.

Thank you all. Bow down

I thought much the same, having looked at all the forum threads. Will drop the clutch and speak to Ashcroft as a matter or urgency. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Hi. Read an old thread of yours and wondered if you ever found out what was causing the knocking? I have exactly the same noise/issue with my 2012 90 X -Tech.
Any help or advice appreciated!

I had an idle ‘rattle’ coming from the gearbox this week.
It turned out to be the tinplate surrounding the gearbox mount
Half falling off and tapping against the chassis
No idea what this tin plate does
Nor why I have it on one mount but not the other

It's a heat shield to protect the rubber mount from the exhaust.

#you don't need to replace it! Its a free repair Smile

Just bend it so its 'sprung' against the chassis/mount/gearbox, so it can't vibrate.

Its job is to simply to stop the heat from the exhaust cooking the rubber. 2005 Td5 90 XS
