Surely covered by warranty to have broken so soon after purchasing?

Yeah should be covered by warranty, not trying to tell you to suck eggs, but did you fit them correctly? As i know they had a bulletin out as people where fitting them incorrectly and the break exactly where you've described.

Terrafirma shock fitting lesson;
The first 2 pictures show a correctly fitted rear shock absorber. The second 2 pictures show the results from incorrectly fitted shock absorbers. Even the strongest shocks will break if not fitted correctly, we do expect them to be used off road and we accept they have to withstand abuse and although no shock will last forever they will last much longer and often exceed expectations if fitted correctly........... The top shock mount has 2 washers that are flat on one one side and dished (convex) on the other, to the uninitiated they look better with the rounded or dished side facing out especially after you have spent 10 minutes hunting around in the grass for them! In fact the dished side is intended to fit against the shock bush to allow the shock to move during wheel travel, fitting the flat side against the bush will pinch the shock restricting movement and causing it to break? On the bottom mount you can clearly see the different bush mountings in the pictures. Post 1994 Defenders and Discovery 1s have cups welded to the axle shock mount to locate the bushes, for anything other than standard travel shocks these must be removed. In the picture where the new bush is visible the cups have been removed allowing freedom for the shock to move during wheel travel Pinching the shock washers or any metal to metal contact will prevent the shock from moving and cause failure such as in the 2 pictures, either the pin breaks off or the bottom can break out of the shock itself. Old man emu setup for me, on second set of shocks now but if that happens every 10 years then it is great value as I offroad them quite hard! Defender 90 TD5 County -
You need only two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesnt move and it should: WD-40. If it moves and shouldnt: duct tape it. |

Just so I know what I am on about when I fire these shocks back 1 is defo fecked as the oil has come out
 but the other doesn't push back out if you compress it in where the new Konis do and the old standard do as well  so can I say that's fecked as well |

I also notice from the above photos that they have still not sorted the issue that the top mounting ring on the damper is larger than the retaining washers. This problem causes the damper to be pushed off the bush and into the chassis (if lucky) or smash your fuel filter off.

Now on my second set of TF rear shocks in 4 years and approx 30,000 miles.
With the first pair (+5" Pin-Pin type) of shocks I found that the lower pins bent on full articulation and the bushes perished badly after 2 years. TF do not sell just the bushes and they are different sizes to standard LR versions. When they were replaced with the second set, the damping rate was noticeably different between new and old. Wish I had gone for OME first time round now... |
