There aren't that many companies providing portal axles as there generally isn't that much demand.
Before companies started making custom portals, people used axles from Unimogs I believe. Tibus have received a fair mount of criticism for blatant copying products other companies have spend years and thousands developing. The twin motor winch was what wound (excuse the pun) everyone up. Think it was a gigglepin copy. From what Oilworker has said on Devon 4x4 the portal axles are pretty reliable although he seems to do regular oil changes on them.. Not cheap, questionable morals from the company that builds them, but pretty good kit. Hope this helps! |

Thanks Mike,
I had heard something similar hence questioning whether there are any other makes out there. Granted, I may have to go onto mainland Europe to get them. |

It'll make the ride very unstable and the steering will be very 'lumpy'.  |

Why do you say that? There's no reason why it should do either of these, and certainly the guy with the 130 mentioned above hasn't reported any such issues. |

There was a firm based near Inverness called Portalrover, I do not know if they still exist though.

Have you ever driven one? I have. 'tis true it was over 30 years ago but it felt horrible even at 30 mph. I've driven a Scammel Explorer that felt a lot more stable depite the driving seat being several feet higher. |

Something to bear in mind with portals....
when I worked at the main stealer we used to get a few 110s in with portal axles, the whole conversion was called Agrover. Anyway, they were 200 and 300tdi engines at that time, one day one came in with a misfire, one cylinder not working at all. It took a while to sus it out but when I removed the cylinder head no 4 piston wasnt as far up its bore as no 1 piston when at top dead centre. The crankshaft was twisted causing no compression on number 4 cylinder. The cause.....portal axles are geared down by quite a bit so add that to the gearbox gearing and the transfer box and the diffs then the wheels are geared down a lot from the speed of the engine. So the engine is running clockwise at say 1200rpm, driver leaves gearbox in first gear with the clutch down and rolls backwards. the input shaft from the gearbox going into the clutch is now spinning the opposite way to the engine and all that gearing down is now working the opposite way round and the wheels are spinning said shaft very very fast. The driver lets the clutch pedal up and yeeeehaaa one twisted crankshaft. Very expensive  2003 Td5 90

I know some people use Volvo axles. They are lighter then the Unimog axles I believe.
