TD5 home service
Hopefully I'll word this so it makes sense,

I'm planning on servicing my TD5 my self over the Easter break. I personally am not mechanically minded at all, fortunately a friend, Paul, has offered to help whom is very Landrover experienced though more V8 than TD5.

I'm doing it my self to A save money and B learn!

Paul is coming up for a weekend to help - and have beers - so I need to get everything here waiting. The beers I will have under control, however the service items not so much.

The 110 is a 2003 and currently on 73k miles and I bought it 4.5 years ago on 63k, soo I'm servicing by time not mileage. I'd like to give a thorough service and do as much as I can whilst Paul is here (all day surtax and all day Sunday)

I know what the book says for what needs doing, but I'd like some input from the wise as what I should prioritise and what else you think I should do while I have Paul here?

Also any suggestions on the best place/brand to get the service items from?

I appreciate its a very novice question but whilst I paid for the last major service, I learnt nothing.

Thanks in advance. Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful!

I'll just give you the best tip, I'm sure many will benefit....

When you remove the main oil filter, loosen it off, then put a plastic bag around it (the filter in the bag) and unscrew it, the oil/filter etc will stay in the bag and not drop everywhere.... You'll learn to juggle the filter out around the turbo oil pipe withe experience Cool

Hi

First thing parts, there is a Europarts in Abingdon just off A34
Give them your reg no and they will supply you with everything you need!

Don't skimp get every filter, including the spinner, they will also supply you the correct grade oil too.
2 filters on engine, one centrufuge, one canister, fuel filter, air filter,
Do the axles, gearbox, transfer box, simple drain and refill.
Get a decent container to catch it all in, and a 25 ltr drum to store it in

Grease prop shafts, and ujs, check wheel bearings etc, wheels off, look at brakes, check discs, pads etc
Check all fluids, check for leaks, oil leaks etc, lights all working......?

It's all quite straight forward, I'm sure you will be fine Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

If you get your bits from eurocar parts get premium filters, they do cheaper stuff but dont bother

careful how tight you do the top bolts up on the spinner filter housing , they only as small thread in alloy housing and strip easily

Make the best of having your friend there and do as much as you can get done. Grease all grease nipples change brake fluid if you can and maybe change coolant if it's not been done in the last 5 years.

I always use genuine filters and last time I did mine I bought the filters from the main dealer but was a boxed set of genuine filters but not in Land Rover boxes,Mahler, Coopers, etc.

When you change the diesel filter be sure to fill the new filter with diesel before you fit it this will save you having to go through the purge procedure to remove air from the system

If you do need to purge the fuel system it should be in your handbook but basically you depress the gas pedal 5 (or is it 6) times in quick succession and this will tell the ECU to run this procedure, MIL light will come on while it does this and go off when finished.

Let us know how you get on. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Canister filter next to turbo can be a bit of a Censored easier if you have a filter remover or incredibly small hands!!! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

If you struggle with the canister filter wrap it with a sheet of wet and dry or sandpaper with the abrasive side inside this will enable you to grip it. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Land Rover have an A B C service guide sheet. I will dig a past one out and upload a pic. At the milage and age then your defender will require the larger B service.

I'll do it when I get back from work tonight. 2002 110 td5

Don't forget to drain the agglomerator Thumbs Up if you don't know that is the small water separator just in front of the R/R/H wheel station.

You can find the above sheet on several sites on the internet.

The agglomerator is that not the same thing as were the fuel filter is in? so it will be drained while changing the filter.

Nice that you are going to do it yourselves, it is very rewarding. Roel

Couldn't replace the oil filter on mine without unbolting the oil return pipe, got the old one off as it was a pattern part that was slightly shorter than the new OEM filter. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
