The article says the PUMA engine can't meet tightening emissions. Does that mean the 2.2 is the PSA derived unit in the Freelander then?

The more I think about this 2.2lt engine, the more upset I get! What about the 3.2lt 5 cylinder Ford, I would trade my 110 in tomorrow for that!

The other more simple consideration is they are testing an engine in the defender - but not for the defender.

2.2 I would think would be hard to notice the diference from the 2.4. But like others have said I the would love to see Toyota busting engine in the stable, a detuned 2.7 V6 in there should do the job. BUT and it is a big but, whats the point of a 150bhp plus engine without a transmission that can handle it? If we think that land rover would devellop a new or stronger transmission this close to a modle change then we are just fooling ourselves. Also it should be noted that land rover should not take all the blame here, indeed no, do you think they had a choice when the 2.4 TDCI and the gear box was offered by Ford? I would say unlikely.

The only thing we can hope for is they have listern to people who drive defenders and not the accountants when it comes to building Project Icon.

Good job I am picking up my new 110 next week. Even the ford ranger gets more power than defender, cant believe a ranger has a stronger transmission. They havent even got leaf springs and drum brakes.

I didn't understand.........

Puma 2.2 and Puma 2.4 ARE THE SAME ENGINE!!! the 2.4 have only a little more stroke!!! same bore and 2.2 have less torque!!!

Here in Italy the NEW transit with 2.4 Puma TDCi engine 140CV IS EURO5!!!!!

From LRO photos seams that the bonnet has a lowered "hunchback".....

but I do not think that for only 2 years LR will change a lot of things if Puma is EU5.

Changing the engine (I mean not a Puma engine but another type) means at least, change the gearbox bell, engine mount, ECU, ......... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

This is from the Australian "Car Advise" web site and refers to the new Ford Ranger ute due in a year or so.

Although speculation suggests that the 2012 Ford Ranger ‘T6′ will use a 1.6-litre variant of the new line of Ford global EcoBoost engines, we believe the Ranger will utilise the 2.0-litre variant of the EcoBoost engine. The upcoming Volkswagen Amorak will hit the ground running with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the 2012 Ford Ranger ‘T6′ is likely to be the same if it is to compete on level ground.

Pictured on this production prototype is Ford’s 3.2 litre Puma turbocharged diesel engine. It will replace the current 3.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. The 3.2 litre Puma engine produces 150kW and an impressive 470Nm of torque. It can currently be found in the Ford Transit.

Insider sources also suggest two other engines will be available in the Ranger. A 2.2 litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine (also codenamed Puma) and a 2.5 litre Duratec petrol engine (identical to engine currently used in Mazda3) will also be available, in addition to the 2.0 litre EcoBoost engine mentioned above.

Transmissions expected to make it to launch are the MT75 (five-speed manual gearbox), MT82 (six-speed manual gearbox produced by Getrag) and the 6R80 (six-speed fuel efficient automatic gearbox).


Interesting that they mention only a 2.2 and 3.2 litre Puma engine. Now, if the Defender could get the 3.2 litre engine that would be much better.

They will have to give the Ranger permanent 4x4 (i.e. use 4x4 all the time) to handle the 3.2 5cyl. I had a 2.5 TDCi Ranger and it was horrendous for spitting the back end out and struggling to getting the power down with just 143PS and 244lb/ft going through the rear. It is the reason I did not bother with the 156PS and 277lb/ft (or however much it is) 3.0 TDCi. I thought it was too much for it to safely get down.

Im guessing Ford are re-shuffling the engine line-up in the Rangetr due to the VW Amarok and upgraded Navara - I believe the 2.5 Navara is now rated at 190ps and the are dropping a 3.0 V6 in rated at 235ps. I wonder if the 2.5TDCi is continuing because they had already agreed to licence it from VM and so it would cost them to drop it and use the 2.4TDCi PUMA instead.

this all ties in with what I've been told - 2.2 puma (not the PSA option as per the FL2)

I believe its all about Ford rationalising their engine line up.

has anyone seen or heard anything about a revised pedestrain friendly new bumper coming in with the new engine?

further more the 2.2 with have a dpf - I'm about dubious about this as I make a wee small amount of bio diesel and I've heard the two dont mix - anyone know more?

I reckon it'll take more than a bumper to make the front end of the truck pedestrian friendly. I suppose it might be kinder to their knee caps but I suspect the rest of them will be toast as they slam into the grille. Shocked One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
